wr" 24 Scugog Citizen Tu z day, March 16, 1993 Legion prevails through a tough series It has been a long, tough, grinding week for the Port Perry Legion PeeWee A team. The Legion gang are in the "semi-final round of the OMHA playoffs against Bradford and at first it looked like we could wind it updin 6 games, but at his point we are heading into Game 7 on Sunday night, leading 7 points to 6 with 8 points required to proceed to the All-Ontario finals. A win or tie will send the boys on, but a loss will mean another game against Bradford. The opening game last Friday in Port saw our first win 4-2 with Adam Jones opening the scoring from Jay Strickert and Scott Heffern and Shane Norton getting our second from Scott Jeffrey and Mike Heasman. Bradford came back with one and then Danny Robinson opened our lead to 3- 1 with an assist to Scott Heffern. Bradford again came within one and Scott Jeffrey got our last with an assist to Danny Robinson and Shane. Kent Johnston handled the goaltending for the win and was in top form. The next game was Sunday in Bradford where we dropped a 4-2 game. Bradford jumped into a 3-0 lead by the second period and our boys then had to re-group It was the last two minutes of the third when we first tallied, an unassisted goal by Rob Murphy who broke in on the net and another from Daryl McEnaney with an assist to Rob M. and Scott Heffern. The goalie was pulled for the extra attacker but one slipped into our open net. Luke Carnaghan was on top of his game in net despite the loss, and certainly could not be faulted for the loss, as Bradford's first 3 goals were all well earned. We returned to Bradford on Monday for Game 3 and came out with a 6-3 victory. Goals went to Daryl McEnaney, unassisted, Rob Murphy from Shane Norton, Scott Heffern from Shane, Shane from Danny Lyons and Scott Jeffrey, Scott Heffern again, Rob Murphy and Shane, and Shane into the open net unassisted. A five point night for Shane. Nice job. Kent Johnston was a saint in our goal that night. Wed. night saw a return to Port ice and another 4-2 win for the Legion gang. Rob Murphy opened the scoring on a power play with assists going to Mike Morden and Colin Laird. Then Jay Strickert broke in from the corner, after a pass from Scott Heffern, to beat the Bradford goalie. Bradford was able to come back and tie it due to us playing short handed but Mike Morden broke that tie on a long shot from the blue line, unassisted and scored what turned out to be the winner. Shane added an insurance marker with assists to Jay Strickert and Adam Jones. On Friday, Port hosted Game 6 and dropped a 5-3 decision, but Port had lots of chances, but couldn't capitalize. Scott Heffern opened the scoring from Danny Lyons and Shane, and then Daryl McEnaney added another from Rob Murphy and Rob a final from Shane. Kent and Luke shared the net and certainly kept us close. The score was actually 4-3 but Bradford popped one in our open net after that. We wish him a speedy recovery and a quick return. Game 6 on Saturday in Bradford saw the best game yet and to cap off that game, it ended 2-2 after a 10 minute overtime. The boys tallied their first when Mike Morden handed off to Rob Murphy, who broke in and counted number one. This tied the game at one each with Bradford scoring first. We then went ahead late in the second when Shane Norton and Scott heffern set up Daryl who sent a high fly ball shot from the point which landed behind the goalie and gave us a 2-1 lead. Bradford was able to tie it in the third on a power play and despite out playing them, the Port gang could not add the winner. We had a breakaway, a penalty shot and even a couple off the post, and to top it off, we kept Bradford in their own end for 6 minutes of the 10 minute overtime, but we couldn't add the winner. Kent Johnston played the game of his life and was outstanding. On Sunday, March 14, Port gave Bradford an 8-2 thrashing and we are now advancing to the All-Ontario finals against Ancaster. This was an excellent game and again Kent Johnston was a star. Port jumped out to a-2_ goal lead by the end of the first with Jay Strickert counting both, one unassisted and Adam Jones assisting in the other. Bradford counted one but then Rob Murphy counted for us with Mike Morden and Adam assisting and Rob again with Jay Strickert and Scott Heffern helping. Shane Norton then jumped or the wagon with an assist to Rob and then Jay Strickert got a hat trick with help from Rob and Daryl McEnaney. Scott Heffern then got his own with Adam assisting and Shane again from Scott and Rob. The game was a rough one from the beginning and we suffered one casualty. Danny Robinson took a heavy check in the first and was taken to the hospital where he was found to be suffering a broken collar bone. He will be sorely missed in the championship series and we wish him well. Congratulations to all the boys' and to Gary Geer, Ed Teno and Ralph McCullough.
