Usually by this time I have found two or three Great Horned Owl nests. I guess this project will have to wait, God willing till the end of March. What are the signs of spring in North America? I expect the most famous is the return of the Cliff Swallows to Capistrano in California. We mustn't forget. Hinchley, Ohio where every 16th of March the buzzards return as they have for the past 40 years. This year again on March 16 at 10:45 a.m. the first Turkey Vulture was seen by Tom Kotulak on the Buzzard roost, in the Hinckley reservation, some twenty five miles south of Cleveland What are the signs of Spring in our area? I guess in all fairness we must begin by talking about the famous Wiarton Willy. He makes his presence known on Ground Hog Day in February. The single most important sign of Spring for the people I see and talk to is the return of the Red-Winged Blackbirds to the causeway in Lake Scugog. Their song is a liquid, gurgling Konk-la-Ree or O-Kay-Lay as they sit on top of the cat tails calling out over the still frozen swamp. For some people the American Robin is the favourite first sign of spring. I don't think that they are as significant. All winter I have seen small flocks of these birds on the West Quarter Line Rd. and the Shirley Rd; eating Buck Thorne berries. It is open for discussion however. When I was in the bank the other day, I heard a man say that he knows when Spring arrives, because the Robins start hunting for worms on the top of his septic tank. For the people at Pine Point it must be the return of the Great Blue Horne to their rookery. When you hear their deep harsh croaks and see them carrying sticks you know that spring is here. 8ince Port Perry is the Purple Martin capital of Ontario, the arrival of these birds, along with the Tree Swallows in early April, must be a joy to many people in the area. Let us hope that this spring will be warmer so that these birds will be able to find food, since last year was a disaster for many of them. The first sign of Spring for a Naturalist is the arrival of the Horned- Larks in the last week of February. I see flocks of these birds feeding along the shoulders of the road, always a hopeful and heart warming sight for me. Checking old nests in late February to locale Great-Horned Owls that may be nesting always poses a challenge for a naturalist. It is hard to believe that in Algonquin Park the Grey Jays and Ravens are sitting on eggs by March 15. I often remember a trip I took to the Park in early April to photograph the Gray Jay. We hiked three miles in deep snow carrying an extension ladder, thankful for the warm sunny day. Another thing I like to do in early April is to take my dog, a black lab, over to the park at the end of the road on Scugog Island. I walk, with rubber boots on, through the tag alder, and watch her flush out the old Timber Doodles (The American Woodcock). I must do this in the evening just before dusk because there is nothing quite like stopping on a spring evening to watch the prenuptual flight of the Woodcock. I know spring has arrived at my home when the spring peepers sing in the ponds beside my house. The saying goes neighbours, who have lived in the area for years say that Spring has not arrived until the frogs have sung three times. This means that twice the frogs must sing followed by a cold, quiet time. The third time you hear them will be followed by warmer weather and no frost. I can't wait to be in bed one night enjoying my cup of herbal tea; the window open to listen to the chorus of the frogs. That is when I will know Spring has arrived. It's been a hard winter so come on frogs - start singing. I want Spring to come quickly. Lack of confidence blamed for car slump Lack of consumer confidence in the economy is being blamed for a slump in vehicle sales in Canada during February. "When consumers see the economy on a more solid footing, a lot of the demand for new vehicles will be realized. We are hopeful that turning point will not be much longer in coming," said Tom Mason, vice president of marketing for General Motors Canada. Passenger car sales by GM in February dropped 29 per cent, while truck sales were down 17.8 per cent, according to figures released last by GM in Oshawa. Both Ford, Chrysler and the makers of Japanese vehicles reported slower sales in February as well. - In actual numbers, GM sold 12,336 cars in February in Canada, compared with 17,390 last February. Truck sales last month were at 7,738, compared with 9,410 in February, 1992. The first two months of 1993 have been tough ones for General Motor sales in Canada. So far, the company has sold 44,310 vehicles, down 19 per cent from the 54,951 sold in the same two months last year. The news was not totally bleak for Canada's largest vehicle maker, however. Several models Pontiac Sunbird, Buick LeSabre and Cadillac Seville showed increased sales in February and there was continued strong demand for Chev and GMC Suburbans and S/T trucks. Mr. Mason termed February's overall sales performance "disappointing," in light of the fact that interest rates continue to fall. But the lack of consumer confidence translates directly into reduced showroom traffic and sales, he said.
