John Foote and Chris Heard of Reel to Real. Reel to Real takes you inside the latest movies The format is simple enough. Put two guys around a table, turn on the cameras and let them talk about their favourite topic: the movies. For the last several weeks, John Foote and Chris Heard have been rapping about the flicks on Rogers Cable 10 TV in Oshawa and the half-hour show seen three times a week is starting to collect a solid audience. It's called Reel to Real, and it's all about movies and the fil.n business in general, topics dear to the hearts of both Foote and Heard. Port Perry native John Foote has been movie critic for the Scugog Citizen since this paper started nearly two years ago. And Chris Heard has been writing film reviews for the Oshawa Times for the last four years. Foote had been doing a general entertainment show on Cable 10 for the past several months and approached Heard about doing a show strictly on the movies. "I was a bit apprehensive at first, but it (the show) is going very well," Heard said last week as he and Foote prepared to tape two segments at the Rogers Studio in Oshawa. "We are trying to educate people about cinema, encourage people to explore movies for entertainment and education," he said. Not only do they talk about particular movies, actors or directors, they exploré issues in the film industry as well. Last week for example, they taped segments on violence in film and how films have portrayed religion over the years. The studio set consists of a round table, two chairs and movie posters as back-drops. Sipping coffee or pop, Foote and Heard essentially engage in an un-structured conversation. Both bring a life-long fascination of the movies to Reel to Real and they often talk about long-forgotten flicks they enjoyed as youngsters. Heard has written several screen-plays and one of his efforts is going into production as a movie this summer. He has a fascination for horror films but says his all- time favourite movie is Godfather 2. He has a strong dis-like for "teen comedies." Foote and Heard have found that most of the time, their film likes and dis-likes are pretty much the same, though not always. They agreed last week, for example, that blaming violence in films for the ills of society is not right. And there is a big difference between films that have a lot of "gore and splatter," and those that create sheer terror in an audience by "under-stating the violence." Hitchcock was a master of the latter. Foote and Heard aren't sure at this time where Reel to Real might lead them. They ; are not specifically looking to move on to "bigger things" but if an opportunity presents itself, they certainly would give it serious consideration. In the meantime, they are enjoying themselves, just talking into the cameras about the movies and everything that goes with them. Reel to Real is seen three times a week on Rogers Cable 10 (Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday) Paul Van Camp CHARTERED ACCOUNTANT 204 Casimir Street, PORT PERRY, Ontario L9L 1B7 7 we 985-9725 Financial Accounting Income Tax Planning & Consulting Financial Planning & Projections Business Consulting CORPORATIONS - FARMS INDIVIDUALS - SMALL BUSINESS Electronic Filing Available Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 23, 1993--7 4 Its Always Worth the Trip to ...
