wy" Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 30, 1999-- 11 4 Craft show coming this Saturday * Port Perry High School is the scene for the "Heart of Country Craft Show" coming up April 3 and 4. There will be 60 juried vendors in this quality show home cookin' lynda kendry which requires that 76 per cent of their products be hand- made. Almost all the crafts people and artisans are from Durham Region and visitors can expect to see such interesting items as hand-made teddy bears and dolls; stained and pressed flower glass; wooden shelves, furniture and accent pieces; floral arrangements in various backgrounds and wooden frett work, an unusual art form that dates back to the 1800's. Doors open Saturday and Sunday (April 3 and 4) at 10:00 AM. Admission is $2 for adults, $1 for seniors and kids under 12 free. I know that, because my car is dirtier than usual, my driveway could be used for the mud bog competition and our white floors aren't evident anymore! Dumplings in Maple Syrup From "Great Moments in Cooking" Readon Publications 1991 In a large heavy pan (with a tight fitting lid) bring to a boil: 2 cups water 1 1/2 cup Maple syrup In a large bowl mix: 1 1/4 cup all purpose flour 1 tbsp. baking powder 1 tbsp. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 cup soft butter Add: 1/2 cup milk Combine all ingredients. Drop by large spoonfuls into simmering syrup. Cover and let simmer for approximately 15 minutes. In place of beef, you may wish to substitute chicken or fish. 1 1/2 lbs. of sirloin, flank or round steak, sliced thinly. 2 thep. vegetable oil 2 cup sliced onions 1 cup sliced celery 1/2 cup canned bamboo shoots, drained 2 cup bean sprouts, canned or fresh 1 cup sliced mushrooms 1/4 cup soya sauce, preferably low sodium 1/2 cup water Pepper to taste 1 packet instant flavoured broth mix 2 tsp. wine vinegar or sherry 1 tbsp. sugar or artificial sweetener beef 3 cup raw spinach, stems removed 4 oz. canned water chestnuts, sliced 1 cup green onions, sliced Brown beef on rack under broiler, turning once. Heat oil in a large non stick skillet or wok, over medium heat. Add onions, celery, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts,and mushrooms. Cook just until vegetables are tender, stirring frequently. In a small bowl, combine soya sauce, water, broth mix, vinegar, sugar and pepper. Pour this mixture over vegetables. Add cooked meat, spinach, water chestnuts and green onions, tossing well to mix. Cook, tossing frequently, until mixture is heated through and vegetables are done to desired crispness.
