muy" Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, April 6, 1993 -- 11 4 Task Force hears Catholic views on education Catholic parents and educators should not take the Catholic education system for granted and must work harder than ever to make sure the system is not chipped away. That was part of the message delivered to "System with a Misaion Task Force" March 30 at the Immaculate Conception Church Hall in Port Perry. The Task Force, made up of parents, teachers, Separate School Board employees and Catholic Clergy, has started a tour of all Parishes in Durham Region and the stop in Port Perry last week wis the first. Task Force chairperson Fran Pereira of Pickering said its purpose is to heighten the awareness of Catholic education among Catholics and to get input from the Region's Catholics on how the system can more effectively carry out its mission. "We want to make people more aware of the system.....to celebrate it and make sure we don't let it slip away," she told the Citizen. She became involved with the Task Force through her work as president of the Catholic PTA of Durham. About 60 parents, teachers and educators turned out for the Port Perry meeting, and Mrs. Pereira said she was "pleased with these numbers," considering this was the first such meeting held by the Task Force. After hearing several short speeches and watching a slide show on Catholic schools in Durham, those present last week broke into smaller groups for a discussion and then delivered several messages to the Task Force members. The main points were that the family, school and church must continue to work in partnership in education; government funding. Kate Hudson, a member of the Task Force said the Catholic education system is under pressure from a Boards must continue to variety of sources including have the right to hire media, consumerism, Catholic teachers; classroom secularism, budget restraints prayers must continue; and other factors. She said the notion of confederated school boards would be the "slow death of Catholic Boards and would not save money." curriculum must be linked to the teachings of the Gospel; and Catholic Boards of Education must continue distinctly with full WE'RE MOVING -.. 0 84 Water Street (Same Plaza - Three Stores North) NEW STORE OPEN SATURDAY, APRIL 10th - 8 AM Drop by and visit us at our new store! The Catholic education system in Durham started in 1859 with a single school in Oshawa for 40 students. Today, there are 46 schools with over 21,000 students. Of particular concern expressed at last week's meeting is a proposed Bill that could force Catholic Boards to hire non-Catholic teachers. The Mission statement calls on the Catholic School Board to provide holistic education which will form the hearts and minds of young people and guide them to grow in their relationships with others. And through this relationship, students will be able to take personal responsibility in continuing the Church's mission of service to society. Attending last week's Task Force meeting were Dr. Earl Lagroix, director of Education, Scugog trustee Kathy LeFort, Immaculate Conception School principal Sue McKenna and Father Charles Faleiro of Immaculate Conception Church in Port Perry. 2 STHREEY ... make your reservations EASTER OPEN EVENINGS for DINNER § PM to 11 PM L, OPEN SUNDAYS from 11 AM to 9 PM; Closed Mon. & Tues. < now and join us for ... 985-1598 ROAD, PORT PERRY ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCEMENT Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Short wish to the py age of their daugh Debbie Short to Terry Stephenson, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Stephenson, (formerly of Manvers Stn.).
