SCUGOG CITIZEN 36 WATER ST., PORT PERRY 985-6397 GM sales rebound The sale of General Motors vehicles in Canada jumped 11 per cent last month over March 1992, according to a statement issued Monday by GM in Oshawa. Passenger car sales were up 14 per cent (21,286 units delivered) and truck sales were up 'five per cent (11,208 units) over the March1992 totals. While a company official called the March/March improvement "encouraging," GM sales so far in 1993 (three months) remain 8.7 per cent below sales figures for the first three months in 1992. 8o far this year in Canada GM dealers have sold 76,867 units, compared with 84,326 units in the first three months last year. GM vice president of marketing Tom Mason said "March traditionally sees Fallen tree puts Township in the dark Most of Scugog Township was without power Friday evening after a tree fell on a transmission line north of Oshawa. Scugog Hydro manager Terry Adderley said the line feeds the Port Perry sub-station and provides power to Scugog Island and rural areas south and west of the community. Power was restored in Port Perry about an hour later after crews re-routed around the downed line. Power in rural areas was out for longer periods Friday evening. He said there were no problems last Thursday and Friday during the ice storms that hit the Township. Mr. Adderley said Hydro crews have completed an extensive tree trimming program in Port Perry and that prevented ice- laden branches from falling hydro lines. Meanwhile, those icy conditions made driving extremely treacherous, especially on highways and rural roads last week. Durham Police reported numerous accidents but fortunately no serious injuries. He said low interest rates and a gradual improvement in the overall economy. should spark vehicle sales in the second quarter. + Chev Cavalier and Pontiac Firebird models continued to enjoy strong consumer demand in March with delivery of 7,462 units. That's a substantial 63 per cent hike over sales last March. Other strong performers were Olds Achieva, Pontiac Grand Am and Buick Skylark. » There were also improvements last month in the sale of extended cab pick- ups, S/T models, Suburbans, APV's and Tran Sports. Strong medicine from page one He warned that Ontario cannot "let things reach the point where in the future international capital markets refuse to lend Ontario mopey without imposing stringent conditions on how we spend on health care, education and jobs." He said the solution to the problem lies in Pp by all sectors in the province: government, business, labour and special interest groups. "I hope that we can rise above our own areas of interest and do it for Ontario," he concluded.
