Students work to convince others dropping out's a drag A group of students at Port Perry High School has started work to convince their peers to stay in school. The group is working on the "Ten/Ten" philosophy which has a simple enough goal: for every ten students who start grade nine, ten should graduate with a high school diploma. Cindy Cole, a youth counsellor at PPHS said the drop-out rate in Durham high schools is slightly below average, but still high enough to'be of major concern to teachers and board officials. She is a strong supporter of the Student Committee that is working to convince students to stay in school. And she thinks that students talking to students will have an impact. The Committee is hoping to send six or eight of its members to a national convention May 14-16 in Edmonton which will focus on the drop-out issue and how to convince students to stay in school. Last Saturday afternoon, students held a car wash at the Port Perry Fire Hall as a fund- raising effort for this Edmonton meeting and despite less than favourable weather collected about $200.
