ho . ® % "aa a ® Bid filed to host National Womens Fastball finals | The Scugog Angels Fastball Club is making a bid to host the 1995 Canadian Womens championship in Port Perry. Angels general manager Don Hurst said an initial bid to the Ontario Softball Assoc. was filed last week arid he expetts to find out this fall if Softball Canada accepts the Port Perry proposal for 1995, "We (the Angels organization) felt it would be nice to hold the Nationals in a small community like Port Perry where we know there would be plenty of interest and support," he told the Citizen last week. And since the Scugog Angels would get an automatic berth in the championship as host club, it would be a great incentive for the team. And he said the Nationals in 1996 will serve as a "springboard" for the selection of the Canadian Women's team to compete in the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta where fastball will be medal sport for the first time. Last week, Mr. Hurst and newly appointed Angels coach Rick Finley met informally with Ed = Glibbery of Scarborough who has put together two tional tour ts to get some ideas and information on what's involved. Mr. Finley, now a Port Perry resident and formerly from Pickering has coached teams in the National finals on 12 different occasions. Bill Dowson, president of 'the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, attended the informal meeting last week and said Chamber would gladly support the bid and the tournament if it was awarded ". "Absolutely, this would bring a lot of visitors to Port Perry. "We (the Chamber) would encourage this," he said. +The tournament lasts a week . (Monday to Sunday) and brings together the best Senior Womens Fastball'teams from every province. It would require a huge amount of work, said Mr. Hurst for such things as transportation from the airport and from mbtels to the games, along with a banquet for all' the players and officials. He's confident that if the Port Perry bid is accepted by Softball Canada, the tournament would would get * solid | supper from local groups. GM keeps 2 shifts General Motors of Canada Limited has advised employees at its Oshawa #1 Car Assembly Plant that due to increased demand for the current Chevrolet Lumina and Buick Regal the plant will continue to operate on two shifts until the planned conversion to the next generation, Chevrolet Lumina in the Fall of 1993. Employees had previously been advised that plant #1 would operate on one shift beginning "this spring and continue on one shift through the summer and fall of 1993. The reduction to one shift would have affected 1,460 employees. ident and general manager of General Motors of Canada, said, "The current forecast for, retail sales of Chevrolet Luminas and Buick Regals in Canada and the U.S. is more optimistic, and along with a noticeable strengthening of the economy, has given us the opportunity to continue with two shifts in plant #1." "We anticipate that we can best meet the market demand, and minimize the impact on our employees by continuing to operate on two shifts. However, because of some short term uncertainty in the ° market, we anticipate that there may be weeks taken out George Peapples, pr of the production schedule." PROM DRESES string of $40.
