SCUGOG CITIZEN 36 WATER ST., PORT PERRY 985-6397 Local trades, suppliers Lt not out of hospital project Every effort will be made to use local trades and suppliers where possible on the $5.2 million expansion to Community Memorial Hospital. The pledge was made last week by Ted Griffen, who chairs the Hospital's building committee which got the final green light from the provincial Health Ministry. "We (the committee) will do our best to ask the contractor to use as much local trades and supplies as possible," said Mr. Griffen. "We can't force Dineen (the general contractor) to do this, but we will ask very strongly and expect co-operation" (from the contractor) he went on. Mr. Griffen noted that $2.5 million in sub-contracts on the project will go to Culleton Brothers Electric of Stratford and County Mechanical of Kitchener, both non-union companies. And hospital administrator David Brown said there are no local general contractors large enough to handle the overall project which includes meeting large performance bonds. Dineen Construction of Toronto was one of six general contractors to pre-qualify to bid on the hospital expansion. Dineen scored perfectly on the pre-qualifying process and the Hospital Board recommended the company get the contract. That recommendation was approved by the Health Ministry last week and local officials say construction will start in late May. About $2.4 million will be paid by the provincial i. Mr. Brown said there will be disruptions during construction for staff and patients at the hospital. "We are asking the community's indulgence," he said of the disruptions, adding every effort will be made to keep them to a minumum. The work includes a 25,000 square foot addition to expand emergency, physiotherapy and other out-patient departments and a further renovation to about 13,000 square feet of the existing building. Dineen Construction was the low bid by about $100,000, including a bid by a completely non-union company. * Dineen has extensive experience in hospital construction in Ontario and is able to put up a performance bond covering at least 50 per cent of the project. "In making last week's announcement that the long- awaited project is to start soon, Mr. Griffen and board chairman Kent Farndale had strong words of praise for the fund-raising efforts in this community. "If not for the people of the Township, this would not be here now. They have been so generous. They can be proud. It is so important that they N ~ realize this," said Mr. Griffen. $4" UNIT Mattress $239.95 $1 69.95 $289.95 $189.95 QUEEN SIZE UNIT Mattress $299.95 $199.95 $349.95 $229.95 HOMESTEAD by Ballard & Carnegie FURNITURE & APPLIANCES Hwy. 7A East - Port Perry 985-2451 or 985-2157
