Durham golf tour should attract top Junior talent A seven-tournament Tour for Durham-Northumberland Junior golfers will be held this summer. This tour will start with a qualifying round on June 26 at Dalewood Golf Club where the top 60 players will qualify, said organizer Mark Rowland. The cost for the qualifying round is $20, and for the top 60 golfers who advance to the tour, there will be an additional $80 fee, said Rowland. This tour, the first of its kind for Juniors in Durham/ Northumberland is for those first, 59 for second place, 58 for third, etc) and at the end of the seven events, the golfer with the most points is the overall winner. At the conclusion of the tour, all golfers will be invited to attend a banquet where the winner will be presented with green dress jacket with the championship crest. Rowland said the idea for this tour came about over the winter as he and John Uprichard felt there is a lack of this kind of competitive golf for juniors in this area. "We felt it would capture golfers who want to pete on a level playing field without handicap scoring. Points will be awarded for each stop on the tour (60 for their imagination, would really make them work on their game, and more important, keep them working on their game," he said. After the qualifying match of June 26 at Dalewood, the top 60 golfers will start the tour July 6 at Thunderbird. The other courses on this tour include Seaton, Fawnbrooke, Whitevale, Cheerydowns, Oshawa and Lakeridge. Mr. Rowland said members of the organizing group were most enthusiastic when approached with this concept. PGA professionals in this group include Jerry Nemish of Lakeridge; Graham Gunn of Dalewood; Dan Lally of Fawnbrooke; Bruce Welsh of Oak Ridges; and Tim McEiver of Oshawa Golf Club. Any Junior golfer wishing more information should contact the professional at their home courses or at any of the courses listed above. Oshawa Hornets move to strengthen the roster The Oshawa Hornets are gearing up for a defense of their 1.C.S. fastball crown, and manager Bill Rourke likes the team's chances in '93. The pitching staff is headed this year by ace Brad Baker who won the MVP award in last year's league championship tournament. And Chris Wilson has joined the squad after pitching last season with Middleton, New York where he helped them to a ninth place finish in the I.C.S. world championshi with Owen Sound Tiremen, Waterloo Twins, Scarboro Thunder and Toronto Gators. The Gators, by the way, have acquired the strong pitching arm of Darren Zack, who was named North American Pitcher of Year in 1992. Fastball fans in Port Perry likely will remember Zack when he pitched so brilliantly in a tournament here several years ago. Rourke said the Hornets have also boosted their offense and def for this season with Jamie Baker completes the three-man pitching staff. Rourke said he's very pleased that Wilson is on the roster this season and feels the pitching staff is the equal of any senior fastball club in the province.
