Sod turning Kent Farndale didn't fool around when she put a shovel in the ground last Friday afternoon at the official sod turning ceremony for the new addition to = Community Memorial Hospital. The energetic chairman of the Hospital Board climbed up to the cab, of a giant back hoe and with operator Carl Becher at the controls, put the giant shovel into the ground much to the delight of the more than 100 guests and dignitaries who attended this special ceremony. Earlier, she called the sod breaking "an historic day in the life of our hospital." And when the new $5.4 million addition is completed in about 18 months, Mrs: Farndale said it will give the community a "state of the art.facility to provide the best health care possible." The addition on the west side of the hospital will be called the Stephen B. Roman Wing, in honour of the'late Mr. Roman whose foundation made a substantial contribution to the fund-raising campaign. Several members of his family were present for the ground-breaking ceremony, including his widow Betty. Mr. Roman, one of Canada's best known industrialists first lived in the Port Perry area when he arrived in Canada in 1937 from his native Slovakia. He went on to build a huge industrial empire, yet always retained a soft spot for Port Perry. Rodd Foster, vice chairman of the Hospital Foupdation and MC for the gro i ceremony said "this fs been a long-awaited day, to say the least," a reference to the fact the planning and fund-rasing for the addition began nearly "six years ago.
