my" Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 27,1953 --19 CITIZEN SPORTS The Annual Lake Scugog Regatta Association Golf Tournament was held Saturday at S with 98 g shooting for some great prizes. Low Gross winners from left Jeremy Geer (Jr.) with 75, Shellie Snyder (Ladles) with 99, and Robin Timmins (Invitation) with 78. Shellle and Robin also won for the longest drives of the day. Not present Sr. Winner Morgan Sears with 78 and Caesarea Fly winner Rick Gay with 72. Port Perry Port Perry's Taylor Ford Mite team put together its best one- day of ball this season on July 24 at the Simcoe Tournament. They were rewarded with the B Championship. Their opening game was gainst the talented B team and our boys played very tight on defence in a tough 1-0 loss. Tim Jones pitched a 2 , hitter in the loss, walked 2 and had 11 K's. Jeff Kane got our only hit off Bramalea. A defensive hi-lite was "Milli" Mllligan's alert back-up play in right field as he nailed a runner trying to sneak fro t to second. * Also, Tim had to throw a batter out from his knees on a ball hit up the middle. Steve MacLennan was sharp in covering defensively at third and "Crackers" Dick was backing up plays well from his left field position. Game 2 was a see-sa The Regatta tournament, as always had some great support in the form of sponsors and donations as you can see from * the sign. And no tournament can be a success without the help of a lot of volunteers, like from left, Bill White, Tina Hamilton, Fran Binns, and Albert Putsey. Don't forget the Lake Scugog Regatta and Field Day taking place this coming weekend July 30, 31 and August 1 In Caesarea. Our batters jumped out to a first inning 3-1 lead but then left a lot of runners stranded as the Guelph defenders caught some deep outfield balls and a hot- shot liner off "Dream" Cochrane's bat to stifle our offence, Inspired by their defence Guelph stormed into a 4-3 lead and looked as if they might hang on for the win. Thankfully, or boys took the situation in hand and engineered a 3 run final inning to capture a 6-4 victory. "Robbie" Breen started the rally with a lead-off walk, then Matt Skerratt walked, "Bullet" LeFort followed with a hit to load the bases. That set the stage for "Winger" Jones to hit _a line-drive, 3-run triple. Defensively, the win was a complete game effort by LeFort who allowed just 2 walks and 6 hits while sending 10 batters back to the bench shaking their heads after third strikes. Steve alertly snagged a hard- hit liner to right field elp the team. "Scooter" cinta played heads-up outfield "Captain" on centre field all day long. Offense for Taylor-Ford was by Tim (2 for 3), Pocket-Rocket Skerratt (2 run homer) while "Devil" Koury, Jeff Kane, and Steve had singles, Graham got aboard on 2 walks while Stuart got on by "taking one for the team" off the shoulder. Our opponent for the "B" Championship game was the host Simcoe squad. Our boys were pumped up after their come-from-behind effort against Guelph and were not to be denied. Swift feet allowed them to jump out to a 3-0 first inning lead and they cruised to a 6-1 victory. Simcoe managed their unearned. run in the fourth but our defence hardened to drown any comeback hopes. Matt Skerratt had a solo homer in the third, Mike Koury had 2 hits (to bat 0.500 for the day), Jeff doubled (to bat 0.428 on the day), Mike Mites bring home 'B' Championship MIlligan had a beautiful bunt single, Tim had 2 hits (to bat 0.667 for the Tourney) and Scooter had 2 walks. Tim pitched a one-hitter for the win, gave up 0 walks and had 13 K's. Matt Breen was steady as usual in his fielding positions today. Earlier in the week, on July 20 the Port Mites played at home against Newmarket and won 15-7. The offense was firing on all cylinders and Stuart had a home run plus a single, while LeFort, Skerratt, Jones, Koury and Breen (nice bunt!) each had 2 safeties. "Milli" had our other hit. Tim registered the "W" on 3 hits, 5 walks, and 11 Ks. Congratulations to all our boys on "bringing home some hardware." Good luck in your preparations for your provincial elimination playoff series against Stirling. Girls win two The Dana Forder girls travelled to Pickering for soccer under the lights on July 15. This was a well played game by both teams with Port taking a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Shawna Cornish. Good defence kept the score at 1-0 at half time. In the second half the girls went ahead by a 2-0 score on a goal by Sara Cosway. - A goal by Pickering with 20 minutes to go made for an exciting finish. The Forder team played strong and came home with a well deserved 2-1 win, On July 22 Port hosted Whitby Optimist Club team and due to holidays had to call on six members of the Under 15 team to fill all the spots. Fine offensive play resulted in Cafe Lewis scoring midway in the first half to make the score 1-0 for Dana Forder. Nice set-up on this goal by Sara Cosway and Shaun Gault. At half "time the score remained 1-0 for Port.
