~ ~ if Scugog Citizen -- Th day,' July 27, 1993 - "HIV test can be done in doctor's office People who had a blood transfusion between 1978 and November 1985 should be tested for the AIDS virus, .according to provincial health officials. « It was during this period that blood used in transfusions was not being screened for HIV, the virus that leads to AIDS. Health' officials last week urged Ontario residents to have the test now, while stating that the number of HIV cases from blood transfusions is expected to be very small. Dr. Robert Allin, chief of } dical staff at C ity Memorial Hospital said it, would be difficult to a a A A determine exactly how many blood transfusions were given at the hospital in those seven years, shot of manually checking all records. However, Dr. Allin said that anyone concerned can contact their family physicians and arrange to have the blood test done. "It is a simple test that can be done easily in the doctor's office," he said. Any blood samples taken in Port Perry will be sent to Peterborough for analysis. It takes about ten days for the results to come back. ' He said if a sample tests positive for HIV, the lab will run the test again, and most doctors will also order a second sample to be taken. If that shows positive, patients will be referred for treatment immediately. Dr. Allin said physicians in Port Pérry have done a few HIV tests, but he expects the demand for the test will increase because of the wide- spread publicity last week that some bldod could have been tainted with HIV. It wis in November 1985, that blood in Ontario used in * transfusions was first pre- screened for HIV.
