Subscriptions sold outside Scugog Township. - EDITORIAL 4 Scugog part of Scarborough?? municipal structure that includes Scarborough? . We certainly hope not, but. g.c. There appears to increasing pressure for an idea that would scrap the current municipal structure for Metro Toronto and the regions that surround it including Durham. Already, the provincial government has established what is known as the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) a kind of "super region" that stretches all the way from Halton in the west to Durham in the east. . An op-ed article in the July 22 Toronto Star by three Metro Toronto councillors, Paul Christie, Ila Bossons and Anne Johnston, should be "must reading" for every municipal councillor in Durham Region. . . The "article, headlined "The shape of Toronto to come," suggests strongly that the current municipal structures within the GTA ought to be scrapped and replaced with five new cities: Toronto City Core, Peel-Halton, Etobicoke-Peel, North York- York Region, and Scarborough-Durham. "The time is right for the establishment of a directly elected GTA council with scope limited to GTA-wide infrastructural concerns like conservaftionsdrinking water, sewage treatment, garbage disposal, arterial roads, transit, airports, police, ambulance and infrastructure planning," the article states. Thanks, but no thanks. ' : If Durham Region and Scarborough b a 1 unit, where would that leave Scugog Township, or Uxbridge, or even Oshawa, for that matter? hg How long would it be before the new city just takes complete control over all municipal functions and places like Scugog and Uxbridge just di r forever as icipal units with .at least some powers and certainly identities of their own? The three Metro councillors who wrote the Toronto, Star piece suggest voters in Toronto, North York and other municipalities may have the chance to voice their view a year from November in some kind of referendum on this issue. . They also say the 'move to five super cities makes sense because Metro Toronto is already supplying many services to the people of the GTA, but the Regions of Halton, Peel, York and Durham are growing faster in both people and assessment that they have more power (read political clout) than Metro. And that scenario will continue if the status quo remains. It was just 20 years ago that Durham Region was created, a move that was leis than popular among most people in the smaller townships and villages. Whether Durhar#is providing services more efficiently is still a topic for hot debate. Finally, after two decades the creatures spawned by the Region are establishing their own identities. But getting drawn into a structure with Scarborough? The idea is foolish and should be quashed. § Just because the Metro Toronto system, after 40 years, is frought with problems, there is no reason to drag the rest of us m. t The authors write that this idea is all about efficiencies. What it's really about is power--political clout with Queens Park and the federal government. As for places like Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock; they don't need to exist as municipal units, ' At this point in time, this notion of super cities is just dream. But as the decade wears on and Metro Toronto continues to slip, it could become more than that, especially if some can convince Queens Park there are big savings to Could it be that some day Scugog Township will be part of a : Controlled general manager : Darlene Hlozan .advertising sales : Chris Hudson OCNA Member Fa 5 fi iter : Heather McC CCNA Member . \ | 36 WATER ST. I totally believe in capital punishment. If you take a life and are positively proven guilty, your life should be tal taken. This man will be eligible for 72-hour unsupervised day passes as of December 18 this year. Francine is frightened for her life as are her children. He is to be released into the general public. This is a joke. Come on. Let's all get together on this issue. It's up to us. Our justice system has to be changed and only we can do it by voicing out opinions.
