mp Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, September 14, 1993 -- 11 _4 Dairy Princess era comes to an end by Heather McCrae '4 The twelve month reign as the Durham County 1992-93 Dairy Princess has come to an end for Carolyn Barkey, a resident of rural Blackstock. It's also the end of a dairy program that's been in existence for thirty-seven years. For Carolyn, the role of Dairy Princess hasn't been very foreign to her as she had witnessed before the duties carried out by her old ters, Sharon and Elaine, who were the Durham County Dairy Princesses in 1984-85 and 1986-87 respectively. And her mom, Donna, was a Dairy Princess when she was in her early twenties, so you can see how it was only natural for Carolyn to follow the traditions set by her mother and sisters. The Ontario and County Dairy Princess programs have provided its participants with the opportunity to develop munication skills by speaking to school children, service clubs, seniors, church groups etc. At the same time these young ladies were performing admirable public relations activities on behalf of the Ontario dairy producer. Carolyn has had the opportunity to meet hundreds of school children over the past twelve months and has talked to these students about the dairy industry, especially about milk and its benefits to our health. Being a part of many community parades she also attended meetings of the Durham Milk Committee and Holstein Club meetings throughout her reign. Summing up her year, Carolyn says she enjoyed it a lot. "It's a lot of fun working with the kids". The questions the children asked were priceless, especially the kids career now since my involvement =. with the children." The eighteen year old is entering her final year at Courtice Secondary School. But, traditions sometimes die as has happened with the Dairy Princess program. Results from a recent County Milk Committee survey felt it was time for the dairy princess program to change to meet with the views of society today. Therefore, the Dairy Educator Program is succeeding the Dairy Princess program. It's open to both men and women, married or single, and they must be seventeen years of age to compete locally. Over the past ten years the Durham County Princesses TAM: have been Carolyn Barkey, Andrea Lycett, Linda Heeringa, Shelley Holliday, Nadine Stapleton, Wilma Benschop, Elaine Barkey, Krista McHolm, Sharon Barkey, Karen Seymour, Heather McHolm and Janet Brown. If Carolyn's thirteen year old sister, Kathryn, wants to follow the family tradition started by her mother then we may see her as the Dairy Educator for Durham County within a few short years. The Dairy Educator for 1993- 94 is Brenda Metcalf. She and her husband Ron and family operate a dairy farm in Bowmanville. A Reading Specialist (Phonics) An Elementary Teacher A Montessori Directress And a Dedicated Parent from the city who knew relatively little about the bh milking process. Carolyn Barkey, Durham Dalry Princess, 1992-93 Being dairy princess has helped her public speaking skills. Carolyn says, "I never really thought of what career I'd like to pursue but am leaning towards a teaching Ld wv VILLAGE STITCHERY Alterations & Repairs To All Types of Clothing 1621 KING ST., PRINCE ALBERT Barb Mcintyre | 985-2269 | 9 r--I=-0"elg regular price on our entire stock of wool iin our LIAR [ele lly s{e el) #Patons ASTRA - reg. 2.39 ball ..........
