Many unique and Marily Hutchinson with Beverley Saunders and her horse, Devil. See story. Good Samaritan helps injured horse and rider by Heather McCrae When Beverley Saunders slept in after her alarm failed to go off she felt her day was starting on a bad note. Little did she realize the day's events would go from bad to worse but she would also encounter some warm country hospitality, too It was the day of the Western Horse Show at Port Perry Fair and Beverley was intending to show her chestnut quarter horse, Devil, in some of the classes. Beverley lives in Whitby but boards her horse at a stable near Utica. She decided to ride hemhorse to the fairgrounds, something she often does if a show is nearby. Riding along 7A the ride was enjoyable up until Manchester but about one kilometer past the tiny hamlet a disastrous chain of events took place. A cow, grazing in the field, spotted her and Devil riding along the road and charged over to the fence, spooking the horse. At that same time a car with a noisy muffler sped by, freaking the horse even more, causing him to take off at a full gallop but in his frenzy he fell, hitting his head on a double mailbox with Beverley, still in the saddle, underneath him, The horse recovered quickly but, being a bit disoriented, ran into an orchard nearby with his owner following him, limping and calling out to her four-legged friend Meanwhile, on the other side of 7A, Marilyn Hutchinson was watching the mishap from her For Pets UXBRIDGE - SCUGOG ANIMAL CENTRE Port Perry 985-9547 ALASKAN MALAMUTE one year old neutered male obedience rained Free to good country home Loves peopleShd other dogs No chan no pen Senous inquines 985.0707 FREE 3 year oid Alaskan Malamute needs room to roam For more information call 986 4541 GENTLE GIANT Large 1 1/2 year old male Doberman. neutered Loves children. needs much TLC Call 9859426 Say You Saw It in the CITIZEN DIVORCE Questions? Marilyn is a true animal lover and seeing the horse and rider go down just took her breath away. Beverley caught her frightened and bleeding horse and, seeking some assistance, walked up Marilyn's driveway, asking if she had any paper towels and peroxide to clean up the horse's injuries to its legs and head. But it was soon apparent paper towels weren't going to do the job so Marilyn gave the distraught woman an old towel to cleanse the lacerations. Marilyn noticed the young woman was favouring her leg, the one the horse had fallen on, but Beverley insis she was fine, showing her concern for her horse only. "Marilyn was so concerned about me and my horse and insisted | keep the towel and antiseptic, which meant a million to me," says Beverley. Now at this point most people would have written the show off, turned around and gone home, but not Beverley. She's a determined young lady and an accomplished equestrian and thought she and her horse were fine, so off the two continued to the fair, but with Beverley leading her mount. At the fair Beverley entered Devil in three classes, one was barrel racing which horse and rider are a natural at, but Devil, still being a bit hyper, knocked "- over a barrel and became disqualified. However, the two emerged from the ring with two fifths in two other classes. The next day Beverley went to the hospital and learned she had slightly torn ligaments and a sprained ankle, causing her to take a week off work. A week later Marilyn answeted a knock at her door to discover Beverley standing there with a new bottle of peroxide, a fluffy white towel and "the cutest little bowl with a carnation in it." "There are a lot of nice people in this world and Marilyn is certainly one of them," says Beverley, adding, "most people today wouldn't want to get involved with a stranger but Marilyn was there for Devil and me."
