"Bcugog Citizen -- Tuesday, December 14, 1993 -- 17 4 Wado Kai Karate Club celebrates 20 years As the Port Perry Wado Kai Karate club prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary in the New Year, we had the opportunity to interview Sensei Rob Dods, 4th degree black belt and a Director of the Toronto Wado Kai. Rob has been teaching karate in Port Perry since 1983. Q. What is the Port Perry Wado Kai? R.D. It might be easier to begin by telling you what we are not. We do not own commercial buildings with high overhead. We don't require our students to sign long-term contracts. We don't teach weapons because weapons can be taken from people and used against them. We don't use "outside" teachers who may bring opposing values with them. We hear about violence all the time - in schools, on our streets and in our community. It seems to be a constant theme on television, in the news and often in su proportions in movies. These hard economic times cause frustration for everyone in all walks of life and at all ages - frustration that permeates our lives and our families' lives. Parent's concerns are passed to their children. Young people are concerned about their future, their schooling, the job market ahead and about attaining a better way of life. Fru ion, if left, will grow, . We are a quality organizati associated with Toronto Wado Kai clubs in Oshawa and Metro Toronto. We focus on self defense and we offer the best traditional Japanese karate training in the area. We often say our "style" is "meat and potatoes" karate because we focus on the basics that will work for defending oneself. To keep costs low, we spend little on advertising and use especially if people feel down about their world. Our low overhead is reflected in our lower prices, flexible rates and family discounts. Our instructors are trained, screened and developed with a strong sense of community. We are proud of the high calibre of our instructors in Port Perry, all of whom are "home-grown", having received their training right here. "Here" is the home we've had for the past 11 years, the Latcham "Frustration and violence won't go away by talking about it. The old adage "If you are not part of the solution, you're part of the problem" holds true here. I don't believe that anyone has the right to gripe about a problem unless they make the effort to do something about it themselves. We believe that the Wado Kai Club offers a way to do something - to make this a better world for yourself and for your community. Q.
