wp" 33 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, February 8, 1994 Carlito's Way directed by Brian de Palma Kok k What has happened to Al Pacino, that great brooding, intense actor of the seventies? Remember the sheer brilliance of his early work in The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon? Where has that oe of character development It seems that since 1982, when he made the dreadful comedy Author! Auther!, Pacino has wanted audiences to like him. It's almost as if we expect him to turn into Sally Field and agream that he needs to be liked, that we have misunderstood him. His recent performances in no way reflect what we know Pacino is capable of, yet last year he actually won an Oscar for best actor for his overblown scream fest in Scent of a Woman!!! Before that we had to endure him as a Scottish revolutionary circa 1776 in Revolution (1985), as a very different Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part 1II (1990), an annoying short order cook in Frankie and Johnny (1991), which was despite Pacino's hamming, a pretty decent little film. Where has that once great actor gone? Why does he need to be liked? Probably because somewhere along the line, Pacino became more of a movie star than an actor, and that has killed many an actor. In fairness to Pacino, there were glimpses of his former self in Glengarry Glen Ross, but not enough to fill a film. That pretty well describes Carlito's Way, a thrilling, stylish new crime film from director Brian De Palma, who is also trying to rebuild a shattered career. DePalma may have accomplished this, because Carlito's Way is a return to the type of smooth, terrific movie making that made him one of the great directors of the eighties. His folly, was of course, the mega dud, The Bonfire of the Vanities (1990), which managed to ruin a magnifftent book. Carlito's Way is a standard crime film, with Pacing as a tired crime lord who simply wants out of the life. Upon his release from prison he wants nothing more than to retire and run a rental car What has happened to Al Pacino at the lics business. Yet his former past keeps creeping up on him, until he finds himself in way over his head, in fact, a marked man. True it is a story that has been told before, but De Palma's direction keeps the film compelling, and Pacino does good work as Carlito. There is a brooding quality to his work in this film, although there are still times when the "Like Me" sign goes off in his head. Sean Penn steals the film as Carlito's crooked, coked up lawyer, easily one of the sleaziest characters to ever grace the screen. Penn deserves a supporting actor nod for this brave work, it is remarkable, just like Pacino used to do. Some pertinent information about head lice Head lice have been with us for ages but their lack of social acceptability here often leads to overreaction by parents if their children are sent home with a note from school. Most often head lice infestation is a problem with children in school where it can become epidemic quickly if discovered early. It is not unknown for schools to close down because of an outbreak #3 well as the reaction of angry parents who may, unjustly, blame the school. While Canadians regard lice infestation as a thoroughly distasteful condition, which couldn't happen to them or their children, often their feelings are based on folklore and misinformation. Since it is estimated that about 70% of primary schools will report infestations and that approximately 1 in. 50 elementary school children will be affected every year, it is important for parents to understand the condition, keep it not in perspective and know what to do about it. The head louse is a blood- sucking, crawling insect which lives only on the human head where it attaches its nits (eggs) to the hair behind the ears and on the crown and back of the head. Lice can only survive for about half a day off their human host and cannot live on household pets. These tiny wingless, greyish insects might properly be described as a nuisance because they do not carry disease or cause illness. Their presence has nothing to do with poor hygiene. They like clean heads just as much as dirty ones and they are highly contagious. Young children should be told not to share or borrow personal items such as combs, brushes, hats and scarves. Head to head contact is the most common way lice spread and this is most difficult to avoid with young children particularly. Inspection with a magnifying glass is most effective to detect the tiny greyish-tan insects. The nits (eggs) attached to the hair shaft are small white-tan specks and can be seen more easily, usually at the nape of the neck and behind the ears. If the inspection is positive this is the moment when discretion is required. Don't react emotionally. The condition is no reflection on the child or the parent. Making the child feel that something terrible has happened may result in guilt feelings, that they are dirty or bad. If one member of the family is infested all others should be checked. If you hear that a playmate is infested inspect your child immediately. The most significant advance in head lice treatment has been the introduction of permethrin, a substance highly toxic to head lice with very low toxicity in humans. It is available at pharmacies in the form of a creme rinse (NIX) and is highly effective with a single, ten minute application, while other products may require more than one application. It is also approved for use in children as young as two years. Some products such as lindane (Kwellada) are not approved for Interested in advertising in our Wedding Directory call Chris Hudson 985-6397 for the details P Permethrin' has an added benefit because it persists on the hair for up to ten days after application which may help prevent reinfestation. According to the Canadian Paediatric Society, permethrin creme rinse (NIX) appears to be "the preparation of choice for the treatment of head lice" because of its greater effectiveness and low toxicity. A single application is usually all that is necessary. Remember that head lice cannot survive off a human host more than half a day but nits can and it is important to launder or dry clean clothing such as hats and scarves, towels, pillows and bed linens. The lowly louse has been with man since time immemorial and, unlike some other plagues, was not brought to the New World by Europeans. They have even been identified on the scalps of prehistoric North American Indian mummies. It is certain that they will continue to be with us so the wise coursg is to understand them and be prepared to identify and treat them effectively.
