Concert for Elaine Citizen -- Tuesday, February 81994 --5__& Trustees pledge support for French Immersion busing Scugog trustees Bobbie Drew and Joyce Kelly say they are both solidly in favour of Suvi Srtation for French Immersion students. "Oh, yes absolutely.-I will fight for the byafng," said Mrs. Kelly on Frigdy, and Mrs. Drew said the séme thing in an intefview with the Citizen on this issue. In'fact, she said if » motion to cut the French Immersion busing ever comes in front of the finance committee which she chairs, she said she will vacate the to vote against the motion. (Committee chairmen do not usually vote on recommendations) Parents of French Immersion students attended a School Advisory Committee (SAC) meeting at R. H. Cornish last Thursday evening where the busing issue was discussed. One parent who asked not to be identified told the Citizen afterwards, parents arg very concerned that if busing is ever taken away it will effectively kill the French Immersion program. Parents would haye to arrange transportation to Cornish School for their children to continue in the F.I. program. "Over the long term, this is more than just a transportation issue. It is a program issue. If there is no transportation, enrolment (in FL) would start to decline," said the parent. Trustee Kelly told the Citizen she agrees that cutting the portation would e kill the French Immersion program. But she expressed confidence that trustees will not vote in favour of taking the transportation out of this spring's budget. And she said there is no recommendation in front of the board at this time to delete transportation for F. I. students. About 275 students from all over Scugog and parts of Brock Township are in the French Immersion program at Cornish, the only school in Scugog where it is offered. Some parents are also expressing concern at a recent Durham Board decision to raise the entry level into F.I. to grade one pi' opened Both trustees Drew and Kelly said this is in the best interests of the young students. It will allow better assessment to determine if they are suited for French Immersion in grade one. These issues are will be discussed at a meeting tonight (Feb. 8) in the library at Cornish School at 7:00 PM. 'Board Officials will be there to answer questions. If you were chilled to the bone the evening of Jan. 28, then you should have come the the benefit concert for Elaine Lally at the Town Hall. It was one big party, filled with warmth, as people of all ages came to support Elaine in her fight to recover from serious injuries suffered in a car accident last fall. Among the near sell-out crowd were our own Mayor Hall and Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor from Uxbridge and Carol Shepherd, wife of Alex Shepherd, MP for Durham. In her husband's absence, Mrs. Shepherd read a message delivered by him earlier that day in the House of Commons. In part, it read "recently one of our young people, while travelling out West, was involved in a car accident, resulting in continued hospitalization which as placed a severe financial strain on family members. I note that tonight the community will be out in support of a fundraising event in order to show our support for this family. I believe, Mr. Speaker, that it is important to realize, in these difficult economic times when we have so much unemployment in our midst, and other hardships, that our community can rally in support of worthwhile causes and not lose insight in the important aspects of life, which I believe unites all Canadians." VIIVIVPVIIIVIIIIIIVIIIIYY Emcel's Place for Valentine's T's a Sweetheart of a Deal! In the past, several negative feelings have been felt about young people's misconduct at the local dances. However concert organizers had assured the Town Hall Board the event would be organized properly and policed accordingly. Mayor Hall, who has been in support of this concert from the start, praised the young people Friday night for their support of Elaine and her family. And these young folks showed how they could have a good time without violence, drinking or drugs. "Awesome" was the word used by many to describe the show put on by the Modern Day Braves and their music that burst throughout the old building. Throughout the vedios, Janice Lally presented a spfay of purple daisies to the Braves' lead singer, Joe Roncetti. The daisy is Elaine's favourite flower. Although Scruff Connors of Q107 failed to make- his scheduled appearance, Melody Roncetti, the main organizer was more than pleased with the event. "I'm overwhelmed" she said, "by the way our young people pulled together, and proud that they can havessi'good time with out causing any problems".
