EMMERSON INSURANCE BROKERS LIMITED 193 QUEEN STREET, PORT PERRY ONTARIO LIL 1B9 1005 985-7306 All Types of Insurance or A Sled dogs and racing From page one the dogs out for a training run in crisp winter conditions and the- colder the better. As much as he énjoys working with his dogs, training and conditioning them for a season of racing, there's a competitive spirit in Langmaid as well. Just a week earlier, he finished third in a 60 mile race in Marmora, an agonizing single second behind the second place finisher. One of his five dogs had to be put on the sled over much of the course due to illness. But that's all part of racing. Sled" dog racing is popular wherever there is snow in the winter months and Scugog Township residents had a chance to witness the sport last month as part of the Snowflake Festival. Next year in Scugog, aid said he would like to see an Open Class race over a 60 mile course, which would allow him to compete. Langmaid will compete in six to eight events each winter, depending on the weather conditions. This coming weekend, for example, he's off to Bancroft for a 60-mile race. Yes, he said with a smile, someday he would like to tackle the world famous Iditarod, the 1100 mile race across Alaska and the Yukon. But with the cost involved and the fact he would have to train in Alaska for two or three months ahead of but the rewards are great--a prize purse of $100,000 (with $80,000 to the winners) plus a great way to see the Alps, "Just to be able to participate, that would be a dream come true," he said. While more and more people enjoy recreation sledding, Langmaid said anyone interested in racing should be prepared for a big i in money, effort and time, especially the latter. When you have to look after a dozen or more racing dogs, you don't get to take many vacations, . he said with a smile. He starts to condition the dogs for the winter racing as soon as the temperature drops below 60 F. in the fall. He hooks them up to an ATV, puts it in low gear and lets them pull to their hearts' content until there is enough snow for the sled. Once the racing season starts, the dogs are in condition and only require short runs of ten miles to keep their muscles loose. Speed and stamina are the main ingredients to a successful racing team. . These Alaskans are born to run. As he was hooking them to sled last Sunday morning, the team of Iceman, Mudcat, Copper, Tyson, Goose and Rocket jumped around with excitement. At his command, they came bounding out of the enclosed pen, leaped over each and waited very the race, the ch are slim, other . he admits. Another dream would be to run the 700 mile Alpenrod across Germany, France and Austria. That too, would be expensive, Pp ly to be harnessed to the sled. They could hardly wait to get running. Langmaid said to buy a good racing dog these days will set you back at least $1,000. Then become a way of life there's the sled, building a pen, all the food, the medical bills, the custom-made 'house' on the back of the half-ton to truck them to races-- the investment is considerable. Like he said, most racers are not in it to make money. However, for someone who may want to sled just for recreation for the pure joy of a wooded trail on a winter's day, the cost is much less and the pleasures immense. At 85, Langmaid has many years of racing ahead of him. He notes that an 86-year old ran the Iditarod last year and a 65 year old finished the 1100 miles. He has no plans to retire. People who race sled dogs tend to lead a healthy and vigorous life-style, he said, in an obvious under-statement. And they work hard, too. Last week, for example, Langmaid loaded his dogs and sled onto the truck at noon Friday, drove to New York State in time for the drivers meeting that evefling, was on the course for five hours Saturday, arrived home at 2:30 Sunday morning and was up before 9:00 to care for the dogs. For the last year or so, Langmaid has been working with a 14-year old Township youth, teaching him all about sled dog racing. And he's very proud of the youth's skill and determination. y "He's a real natural," he said of the youth. "I'm not looking forward to racing against him when the time comes." But at the same time, he's pleased that the sport, the way of life he enjoys so much will continue for generations to 10% OFF rie PeCCEa when you or AGFA Quality Processing.
