dist. Scouts honour Huggins with Medal of Merit A man who never was a Scout has received one of the highest awards in the Scouting movement. AY Huggins of Port Perry was presented the Scout Medal of Merit by Pine Ridge District Commissioner Ross Taylor at a ceremony held at the Scout Hall 17. °° The medal recognizes "outstanding service beyond the normal commitments to scouting. Mr. Huggins, who first became involved in scouting back in 1960, has worked as a leader, a members of the C ittee, insi of Pine Ridge District and president of the same District. He was recommended for the Medal of Merit from Pine Ridge District and it was approved by the National Council of Scouts Canada. Only about 30 of these medals are awarded annually across the country. On receiving the gold medal and certificate last week, Mr. Huggins said it was "an une: honour, one that I will cherish for the rest of my life." Ironically, for a man who devoted over 30 years of his life to Scouts, he was never a Seout himself. As a youth growing up on a farm north of Belleville, he said there was no Scout organization for him to join. But in 1959, when his church in Oshawa sponsored a Cub group, he volunteered to work as leader, and over the years worked as leader for Scouts and Venturers. He took a couple of years off when his own children were very young, but once they were old Scouting movement. Asked if he has plans to ever get involved again, he smiled and said "perhaps." Mr. Huggins expects to be retiring from his job at General Motors some time in the next year. Asked what it was that kept him Scouting for so many years in so many capacities, he thought for a moment and replied "it is very satisfying when kids who are now adults still call me 'Mr. Huggins." I guess I taught them some respect at a young age." And he added, "through it all, I always had fun."
