Roads may escape serious damage from spring break-up One sure sign of spring is when the five tonne weight restriction signs start appearing on rural roads But spring can mean big trouble for the works department as the frost starts coming out of the ground. Superintendent Ronn MacDonald is hopeful that Township roads will not suffer damage to the same extent they did last year. "I'm being optimistic that things won't be too bad this year," he told the Citizen Last year, spring road repairs cost some $200,000 and the damage was the worst in 25 years, mainly because of early winter thaws that sent water into the ground in large quantities. This winter, the early parts were fairly dry, which points to less damage this spring Mr. MacDonald said roads with bituminous surface are most likely to suffer damage. Problem areas could be on Chandler Drive and Demarra Roads in Ward 3, Old Simcoe Street and Ashburn Road in Ward 1 and the East Quarter Line in Ward 4 Mr. MacDonald also said he does not anticipate severe flooding conditions over the next few weeks. "Crews have been steaming culverts for the last two weeks," he said, adding that roads that normally get water on them in the : wry will get the same this Snow Festival needs volunteers for special event Next year's Scugog Snow Flake Festival could be host for a large International Snow Sculpting Exhibition and the committee is now looking for community volunteers, lots of them Rick McCoshen, chairman of the Festival organizing committee for 1995 said last week the Festival has been d by the Inter Snow Sculpting organization to have this event held during the Pestival in conjunction with ice sculpting which proved so popular during the first Festival held in January But Mr. McCoshen said a large disappointing, he said, as just two local organizations attended A second meeting will be held April 7 at the Kin Hall and Mr McCoshen said he hopes to see a much better turn-out "We don't want to lose this opportunity (for the snow sculpting exhibition) If we don't got enough (volunteer) help the exhibition will go somewhere else," he told the Citizen He is appealing to service clubs, church groups and any community organization to volunteer to work over the Festival weekends next January Anyone wishing more Scugog Citizen =Tuavday, Match 8, 1964 The cast of "Anything Goes' 100k 8 well deserved final curtain cail on Sunday afemoon ser a successful run of this popular musical comedy at the Port Perry Town Hall 1873.
