"There will be a race again next year," Paul Arculus, president of the Scugog Historical Society said several times as awards were handed out late Saturday afternoon for the 26th annual event. There had been fesirs expressed prior to the event that without stronger support, this could be the last Canoe the Nonquon. However, organizers were more than pleased with the 97 canoes in Saturday's race which started at Concession 10, followed the Nonquon River to Lake Scugog and concluded at the waterfront in downtown Port Perry. Unlike other years, Mother Nature smiled brightly on Canoe the Nonquon '94 as the paddlers basked in bright sunshine and the lack of virtually any wind made the final few miles down Lake Scugog much easier. The fastest time this year ovér the 16 mile course was 2:03-19 by René Boogemans and Glen Dawson in the C2 class. Stan Mahacek in the C1 class had a time of 2:14-35.
