The decision to push ahead with plans for this mew hall came late Monday afternoon after councillors spent considerable time crunching numbers on how to finance the project. And the decision to proceed was unanimous except for Ward 4 councillor David Dietlein who argued that the price tag is too' high, interest rates are going up, and the Township should be putting more money into road projects. The actual cost of project has been pegged at $1,045,000 which includes $200,000 for a new parking lot for 100 vehicles. Aside from councillor Dietlein, the remainder of the council spoke in favour of going ahead with the project at this time. "If we (Township) don't do this now, it may not ever get done," said area rep Harvey Graham. "This is an opportunity not to be missed." The financing of the project is complicated. The bulk of the money ($720,000) will come from infrastructure grants from the province, the federal government and the Township. The Township will pay another $77,000 from lot levies and One that didn't get away.... Community groups have pledged $41,000 to the project, leaving a shortfall in funding at this time of $206,000. Administrator Earl Cuddie told council there are just two options on where to find this $206,000-- take it from the Township reserves or debenture it. He will report to council next week on which option to take. "Either way," he told council on Monday," this is going to cost the Township money." Ward 2 rep Marilyn Pearce said that if the project goes ahead, a fund raising committee should go to work to raise the $206,000 shortfall and re-pay the municipality. She said she is "convinced" the community will be able to raise this amount once the project gets the green light to proceed. She also noted that time is running 'velly short for the Township apply for the federal/provincial infrastructure grant money. This community hall will seat 450 for a banquet. Plans call for it to be constructed about 10 metres east of the Scugog Arena with a foyer connecting both buildings. With the wheels now in motion to apply for the infrastructure grants, construction could get underway as early as this September.
