pr. Secugog Citizen -- Tuesday, June 28, 1994 --3 Hospital staff gets big pat on the back The staff at Community Memorial Hospital got a big pat on the back from the Board Chairman at the hospital's annual meeting June 22. "We have the best staff ever-- bar none," said Kent Farndale in her report to the meeting. "T have total confidence in your ability to handle everything thrown at you," she continued. Not only has staff had to work through the year long construction of the new addition at the hospital, Mrs. Farndale noted that they have been "diligent" during these times of fiscal restraint. Referring to the new $6 million addition which is being opened this week for several departments, Mrs. Farndale called 1993 a "stirling year for C ity Memorial Hospi The Hospital's annual report, which is included as a pull-out insert in this edition of the Scugog Citizen, shows the average stay for acute care continues to decline to 7.3 days. Just four years ago, the average stay was 8.4 days. There were 180 births at the hospital in the last year, up from 163 the previous year. Total admissions dropped slightly to Council says no way to field party Plans for a three-day field party on Scugog Line 12 in mid-July were squelched Monday afternoon by Township council In turning down the request for approval, members of council expressed concern over the legal liabilities for the Township and the lack of zoning for such an event. The field party was being organized by Uxbridge resident Carl Debaros who was visibly disappointed when council refused to endorse the request. 'I'm very disappointed. I had really hoped for (council) support for this," he said. He told council the field party, including live bands, sports events and a craft market would probably have attracted up to 2,000 people He wanted people to donate items of food to the party that would then be distributed to the food banks in Port Perry and Uxbridge and to the Daily Bread Food Bank in Toronto Mr. Debaros said security at the party would be provided by law enforcement students at a community college in Toronto In response to a question from Township Mayor Howard Hall, Mr. Debaros said organizers would not be able to afford to pay the $37 per hour charged by off-duty police officers for secunty He also said that if an event 18 properly organized, there would be no problems with security 1250. Radiology work units were up as were the number of surgeries. The report shows the number of emergency visits dropped to 12,924 from 13,480 the previous year. The hospital's budget this past year was $6.6 million, and the financial statement shows the institution ended its fiscal year with a surplus of $80,000, thanks mainly to a one-time Social Contract grant from the provincial government. Adult and teen volunteers continue to play an important role as there were just over 3,000 volunteers hours from the adults and 1137 from teens. A new logo for the hospital was unveiled at the meeting. It has been designed by Rita Rickard of Port Perry, an artist and graphic ro he Togo, in blue on a white background, shows four people with the words "Community Memorial Hospital, We Care."
