Z Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, August 9, 1994 --15 4% Prior Convictions play music from 60's-70's Take five guys who have been" playing music a long time, put them together, give them an audience and you've got Prior Convictions, a "dangerous rock 'n blues band." "We are basically an R and B band, playing music from the 60's and 70's, the music we like. But every once in a while we throw in some straight country or Deep Purple," chuckled the band's bass guitarist Ross Carter in an interview just before Prior Convictions took to the stage at Goreski's on a recent Saturday evening. Ross, a resident of Scugog Island has been playing in bands since his high school days. He said Prior Convictions was formed about two years ago. He and lead guitarist Randy Knox of Oshawa were playing in a group together at the time. They suddenly realized they were getting a bit too old for the heavy metal stuff, so they started out mainly as a blues Then the R and B came and the music "pretty well evolved from there." The group now includes Dave Chester of Uxbridge on keyboard and lead vocals, Jamie Cordner of Brooklin on the drums and Bob Mitchell of Oshawa playing the saxaphone. "There are lots of groups around doing music from 50's and 60's. We saw a gap for 60s and 70's music, the music we grew up with," explained Ross. band. "And there is one thing we do, Members of the rock! n blues band Prior Convictions playing recently at Goreski's. They play the music they like. The result is a highly proficient group with a great deal of versatility and variety. Their first set at Goreski's Lakeside Recreation Saturday night included the Beatles, James Brown, David Wilcox and Burton Cummings. They don't miss a note or a beat, Chester has fine vocal range and the combination makes for a great evening of listening or dancing for those who haven't forgotten the great sounds of the 60's and 70s. Ross said the group plays about two or three times a month and some of the recent stops have been Stoney Lake, Kirkfield and Uxbridge. Last fall they played Halloween Night at Goreski's and it was just a great evening. They'll be back at Goreksi's for another date September 10 and again this Halloween. Asked what the group members like to see when they perform and Ross replied "if we can get them up dancing early and keep them dancing, that makes our night." The name "Prior Convictions" has no special meaning. "Nobody in this group has ever had more than a speeding ticket," said Ross with a laugh. What it means is "we stick to our own convictions." That's making good sounds which are easy on the ear drums and sure to get your dancing toes moving.
