aaa Program will mean big savings on your water bill If you'd like to knock about 30 per cent off your monthly water bill, the Durham Region Works Department has a plan for you. A fixture replacement program is being offered to 180 homes in Port Perry and Prince Albert, and application aerators. In other words, the savings in water and energy costs in one year will just about cover the installation costs, said Mr. Lee. John Hewson of Mr. Rocter Plumbing Services of Port Perry has been hired by the Region to do all the installations for homes in Port forms are now available at the Scugog Township municipal office on Perry Street. The program involves replacing existing toilets that require about 13 litres of water per flush with six litre/flush toilets made in Ontario by Crane. Other replacements in the program include showerheads and sink aerators that use less water. Chang Lee of the Region's Works department said last week that these changes could save a homeowner about $207 yearly, based on ten flushes per day and ten minutes of shower time. The Region estimates these changes will reduce water consumption by 20,000 gallons per year. Thanks to a $190,000 grant from the provincial government, the Region is able to subsidize the cost of the new fixtures and their installation. The unit cost to the homeowner is $147 for a white toilet ( $187 for coloured) $8 for fixed shower head, $14 for hand held model, and just over $5.50 for kitchen and bathroom sink KASTELIC KOUNTING S50) 0 J (6 ORC] 8 5d 3d BI DI Perry and Prince Albert, as well as 140 homes in Uxbridge and 110 in Beaverton. He was one of four contractors to bid on the job and the contract calls for a pre- inspection of the plumbing system before the new fixtures are installed. Mr. Lee said that not only will this program help homeowners to reduce their annual costs for water and energy, it will in the long run help conserve water for the Region itself, which supplies Durham residents with about 12 billion gallons annually. What's more, he said, residential water ti and Septemb good for everyone, he said. _ The showerheads, aerators and low water toilets were carefully chosen by the Region after testing by Works Department staff. There is a one year guarantee on the fixtures and labour, provided by Mr. Rooter. Bill Irwin of Bardon Supplies of Cobourg, who supplied the Crane toilets, said his company would not have got involved in this program without having the utmost confidence that the instalations will be done right. Sal Parisi of Crane Canada said the toilets are manufactured in a plant in Trenton, Ontario, which employs 125 people. The program will be offered to homeowners ,in Port Perry/Prince Albert on a first- come-first served basis. The application forms are now available at the municipal offices and there are two public information sessions August 18 13 from 3:00 in recent years has increased faster than the population growth, Reducing that consumption is PM to 9:00 PM in the council chambers at the municipal office on Perry Street.
