It was the first time in 63 years that descendents of John and Sophia Marlow got together to enjoy each other's company and to catch up on all the news of family members. The Marlow Reunions first started back in 1924 and continued for seven years. The last one was held in 1931 at the farm of Ted Marlow near Nestleton. It's not known exactly why these reunions ceased in 1931, but it probably had something to do with the Depression. At Sunday's get-together, there were numerous special events including a car rally to view cemeteries and Marlow farms in Cartwright, sports and games for the youngsters, a history of the Marlow family by Clara (Marlow) Leask, inspection of the genealogy charts, and exchange of family photographs. Lynn McAvoy and her son Danny travelled from Oakdale California to be part of this reunion. It was their first visit to Cartwright and Lynn said she SR Happy 2nd Birthday JORDAN On August 20th, ii A Pbpb Birthday, Darling! was absolutely thrilled to be part of this special event. It was 160 years ago that John Marlow and Sophia Hagerman travelled by foot from Port Hope to Peterborough to be married. Apparently, there was no preacher in the area north of Port Hope where they lived. They also made the same journey on foot to have their first child baptized. About ten years later, they settled in Cartwright, buying a farm on Lot 15 Concessiop 4 fromthe Canada Co. for 43 pounds, 16 shillings. John and Sophia had nine children (two died in infancy and one at 19 years of age) The surviving children married and the family tree now included the names McLaughlin, Parr, Whitfield, and Weldon. Plans for last Sunday's reunion were first made last November, said Gwenyth (Marlow) Thompson of Port Perry. And she was more than delighted with the large number of people who enjoyed this special occasion.
