Grain growers may opt in to check-off plan A voluntary check-off program to support plant breeding research programs for wheat and barley is expected to be in place by January 1995, following cabinet approval to introduce legislation this fall to amend the Canadian Wheat Board Act (CWB). This program is not intended 'to duplicate check-offs currently in place, and producers who choose not to participate may opt out. The announcement was made August 10 by Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Ralph Goodale, in response to a proposal from the Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF). The check-offs, or monetary levies, would be deducted from CWB final payments beginning with those for the 1993-94 crop year.
