y a THREEPEAT!! For the Port Merchants This week's sports report for the Juvenile Merchants Fastball Team is sponsored by Ives Antiques, Van & Truck World, Classic Hot Dogs, and XL Gas. Threepeat! The Blue Jays tried but couldn't do it. The Merchant Juveniles did it in great style on OASA executive member Bill Danford presents the OASA Shicid and Banner to Port Perry Merchant captain Richard . Brough and Tim Timms. Sunday afternoon at Durham Fields in Oshawa. This team of talented ball players won the All-Ontario Championship as Midgets in 1992 in New Hamburg, and again in 1993 in Port Perry. 1994 was to have been a year of rebuilding as the team moved up from Midget competition to Juvenile/Junior competition. Playing this season in the Oshawa Men's League was at times discouraging as the team faced older and more experienced players, but it must have raised the skills of this group of young athletes another notch. They are now the only Port Perry Minor Ball Fastball team to have won the honoured All- Ontario Championship three years in a row. The Port Perry Merchants proceeded through the All- Ontario Juvenile tournament to the ch p game without dof Toronto. Benefit game The Oshawa City and District Fastball League All Stars will play the world champion Toronto Gators in a benefit game for City League president Wayne Allan who suffered serious injuries in a car accident a few weeks ago. This benefit game will be held at Oshawa Durham Fields on Tuesday, September 6 and will feature an all star City League lineup against the Gators in a nine inning affair. First pitch is slated for 7:30 PM and all proceeds will go to the Wayne Allan family to assist with expenses related to his accident. He was seriously hurt July 14 in a car accident while he wi returning home to Whitby after the Toronto Gator-Sioux City exhibition game in Port Perry. He is still in St. Mike's Hospital in Port Bantams to host OASA finals Port Perry will host the all- Ontario OASA Bantam C fastball championships this coming weekend August 20-21, Eight teams, including the Port Perry Merchants will be in the hunt for the coveted OASA banner and shield. Thanks a bunch Port Perry Minor Softball wishes to thank the many volunteers who gave their time to coach in the Minor Softball system. We appreciate the many hours you have given for hundreds of children registered in our programs - unfortunately you are too numerous to name individually. A special thank-you to our convenors this year who hélfed make everything run smoothly - Greg Goode (T-Ball and 7-8 Mites); Tyler Briley (9-10 Mites); Bill Nolan (Youth Girls); Norma Hartrick (Youth Boys); Walter Drury (Youth Lob Ball). Thank you to the members of executive (Dave Dalton, Dave Kay, Tyler Briley, Doug Dempsey and Carolyn Best) for their dedicated efforts. Also special thanks to Pat Bird who organized, supervised, and distributed our pictures and to Dave McTaggart and Wayne Venning for all their help. Thanks to our Rep team coaches and managers who represented our town with pride where ever they travelled. Finally a special thank you to the young men who umpired for us. It is not always an easy job. Thanks to everyone, hopefully we'll see you all again next year and thanks to this newspaper. a loss, g Scarborough 1- 0, and Wingham 2-1 on a seventh inning, two out home run by Steve Laird and strong pitching in both games by Jeff Card. New Liskeard and the Oshawa "BB" Juveniles were eliminated along the way. In the championship round, the Merchants had to lose twice since they were undefeated. They proceeded to lose the first game to Wingham 5-0, but the Port ball club didn't lose their confidence or enthusiasm for a minute. They knew they had one last chance to do the unexpected, and they did it by winning the final game 4-1, anchored by the strong pitching of Chad Venning * who introduced in the last inning a surprise change-up which he had kept secret all year The game results of the tournament are as follows: Game 1: Wingham 2 - Oshawa 0; Game 2: Port Perry 7 - Scarborough 0; Game 3: Wingham 7 - New + Liskeard 6; Game 4: Oshawa 7 - Scarborough 0; Game 5: Port Perry 2 - Wingham 1; Game 6: New Liskeard 3 - Oshawa 1; Game 7: Wingham 8 - New Liskeard 5; Game 8: Wingham 6 - Port Perry 0; Game 9: Port Perry 4 - Wingham 1. The core players of this team have been together through many seasons and the highly- developed skills they exhibit and the team spirit which they have are highly admired by the parents, fans and followers who watch them regularly. The new players who have added to the team have also done an excellent job of filling spots when needed, encouraging the others through thick and thin, and honing their skills while waiting for their time to be core players. The coaching staff of Ron Redman, Wayne Venning, and Bob Vander Slagt have played a large part in the success of this ball club over the years and should be recognized for the hard work they have done to bring this group of young men to their third all-Ontario Championship. To the citizens of Scugog - there are many young people in town that we should be proud of, and the members of the Port Perry Juvenile Fastball Team are only a few of them. If they lose, the game will be announced once the results of three other games are known. 3 The Merchants were a happy bunch of ball players after defeating Wingham 4-1 in Oshawa Sunday afternoon to 'win the ali-Ontario Juvenile title. It was the third straight OASA victory for this team. Tim Jones tosses a no-hit game for the Legion team August 9, 1994 will be an evening long remembered by pitcher Tim Jones of the Canadian Legion Fastball vep team. With a solid team defensive and offensive effort behind him, he recorded a "no-hitter" and was just 2 walke away from a perfect game. He tossed 12 strikeouts against the Aurora visitors as the team notched a 7-0 win in their last scheduled game of their York Durham League season. Catcher Matt Skerratt called a good game behind the plate to share in the occasion and also had 2 hits. | Aaron Lycett clubbed a 2 run homer in the third inning with Sean Jeffrey aboard on one of his 3 walks in the game. Sean made two nice catches in centre field to help Tim. Mike Wiseman was on base 4 times with 2 hits and 2 walks. Mike Koury (at 2nd base) and Matt Breen (at the hot corner) collected hits. Tim helped himself with 2 hits, one of which was a "slap bunt" that he picked up from the recent Sioux City/Toronto Gators exhibition game. Richard Bryant was robbed of a hit after a hard drive to deep right field and was later on board twice after taking two "hit-by-pitches" for his team. Jeff Kane was rock steady defensively at first base. Team veteran Chris Monsma did a stellar job in his coaching debut at first base! Congratulations to the team and to Tim for putting good pitching, good defehse and good offense together to close out their play at the lake for this summer! Good luck in your upcoming year-end league final tournament.
