pd Bantam Merchants know how to come back This report sponsored by Canadian Tire. On 'Wednesday, August 10th, the Port Perry Bantam Merchants were at home for a tilt with Newmarket. Port The van Camp Contracting team earned a bye Into the game after an outstanding regular season in the 7-8 Mite division of Port Perry Minor Bali. They met the Greebank rep team In the finals. After a scoreless first inning, the Van Camp bats came alive for the maximum 5 runs In the second, and hit steady to the finish. Defense was awesome, shutting down Greenbank, Van Camp won 12- 0. Josh, Leo, Mike and Shane all made great catches In a fine team effort. Front from ieft Andrew Wray, Michael Lycett, Shane Jeffery, Leo Tallion and Josh Kendell. Second row Josigh Atkin, Matthew Krempowich, Jessica Foster, Patrick Dunn, Ryan Mowat ancl Marla Palach. Back row, coaches Steven Dunn, Guy Talllon and Mitch Mowat. needed late inning heroics and won a nail biter 8-7. Matt Kay worked the rubber in the early innings and looked good coming back from an injury. Matt put the ball in play and took advantage of steady defense behind him, highlited by an over the shoulder catch, a la Willie Mays, by Brad Morton. In the first two frames the Merchant's offense was clicking on all cylinders. In fact they had a 6-0 lead after two innings and a 6-2 lead after three. Runs were scored by Carl Phoenix, Brad Morton, Ryan Williamson, Mike Phoenix and Matt Kay on hits by Williamson, Mike Phoenix and Kay. The only thing that could stop the Merchants now was a miraculous comeback by Newmarket. Unfortunately it happened. The visitors scored five runs in the next three innings and took a 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. The only thing that could save the Merchants now was a miraculous comeback. Fortunately it happened. Ryan Williamson led off the inning with an effortless stroke into the gap. (Does grunting arggghh, when making contact classify as effortless?) He peacefully ran the bases and ended up with a triple. (Does sliding hard into the bag, and causing the third baseman to do a near flip in the air classify as peaceful?) Ryan's aggressiveness put him in scoring position for Jason Logan got busted inside but managed to hit a duck-snort over the head of the second baseman to cash in Williamson. After taking second on the throw to the plate, Logan took third on a wild pitch and represented the winning run for Tom Chambers. Tom sent a deep sacrifice fly to centre and the Merchants eked out a heart stopper. The next might, Port rolled into Thornhill and stumbled out suffering a 9-2 loss. Port looked completely dead in this one and will most likely forget the whole game. One bright spot was the play of those who did not get the starting nod, coming off the bench to score a couple of runs and break the Thornhill hurlers shut out. Mike Phoenix, Brad Shanley and Mark Versage had hits in the late innings to make the score somewhat respectable. Port's next action is Wednesday, August 17, against East Gwillimbury.
