Zion Church Over the years Mount Zion Church at Balsam has welcomed countless visitors through its doors and to the numerous special events held by the congregation. But late in July some un- wanted visitors made their way into the Church, and members of the congreglition were shocked to find the thieves had made off with two Yamaha speakers valued at about $1200. Fortunately, that's all that was missing and there had been no malicious damage to the interior of the 1870's building on Concession 8 just a mile or so from the tiny hamlet of Balsam, west of Lakeridge Road. Unfortunately, the insurance carried by the Church does not cover such things as speakers. Ian Robb, an elder and lay minister, told the Citizen last week the loss of the speakers not only impacts on the regular services, it will severely hurt the special activities which attract visitors from all over. In the week before Christmas, for example, upwards of 500 people enjoy the outdoor living nativity. "Without our speakers and without a PA system, there will be no nativity this year," he said. In June, there were more than 300 people at a pork bar- b-q, and again the speakers were used for this function. Mr. Robb said the Church (about 40 families) does not have the money to replace these speakers and police said there is almost no chance they will ever be recovered. "It took a lot of work to purchase them. Those who took them just don't realize the impact on our community (Balsam) and the wider community," said Mr. Robb as he showed a reporter around the Church, a lovely old + building with neatly trimmed lawns and beautiful flower gardens, obviously tended with much care. Mr. Robb and members of the congregation are not so naive to think that whoever stole the speakers might see a newspaper article and feel guilty enough to return the equipment. However, they hope that somebody may have a pair of speakers that could be donated, loaned or even sold to the Church at a reasonable price.
