mp Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, August 23, 1994 -- 3 _ Glenn Malcolm going after the Regional seat There will be two Malcolms on the ballot in the Scugog municipal elections this November Former Ward 4 councillor Glenn Malcolm said Monday he will be seeking the Regional seat. His younger brothéi David announced a week ago that he will go after the mayor's chair when Scugog goes the polls in mid-November Glenn told the Citizen his brother's decision to run for mayor caught him totally by surprise "I had been thinking strongly for running for mayor," said Glenn. "It was a real surprise to find out David is running. We can't have two brothers running for the same seat," said Glenn who acknowledged that he and David are not on the best of terms these days Glenn served one term on council as the Ward 4 rep from 1987-90, then lost that year to Mayor Howard Hall by 100 votes in a race that see-sawed back and forth all evening as the ballots were counted In going after the Regional seat in 1994, Glenn said he is concerned about what he called a "leadership vacuum" in Scugog Township "There is no concrete planning People are woffdering just what's going on, and | think there is too much secrecy," he told the Citizen If elected, he pledged to pay a 'lot of attention to what the people of Scugog are saying and to work towards a "more open council * He said he believes it is possible for the new council to 'get a reduction in local taxes, or at very least to hold the line on tax hikes He said the proposed community hall at the Scugog Arena is a needed facility, but he would have preferred council to debenture the local share, rather than take the funds from the reserve accounts "Those (reserve) funds take years to accumulate," he said, adding reserve funds are held for what should be emergency spending Glenn said the proposed gaming facility on native lands on Scugog Island could become an impbrtant tounst attraction to benefit not only the Missassaugas but the entire community of Scugog 'l am not opposed to this provided it meets environmental and planning act standards," he stated He also said the Township should support the Fair Board with a ten-year lease for the Port Perry Fairgrounds, without 'restrictions He would not want to see the grounds sold for development "We should keep it as open space If the grounds are sold, we (the Township) will never be able to buy it back." Glenn is a life-long resident of Nestleton where he lives with his wife Arlene and their three daughters. The family has a sow- farrow farming operation and Glenn operates a fireplace business in Lindsay Glenn was one of several candidates for the Liberal Party nomination in Durham riding in the last federal election Yvonne Christie, who currently holds Scugog"s seat on the Regional council has not (as of Monday) indicated publicly where she will be running in the November election Children enjoy Bible School Hope Christian Reformed Church in Prince Albert were the hosts of this celebratior party held every morning of the week of Aug 8-12 Vacation Bible School is a fun filled morning for children ages 3-11.
