=m» 26 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, Septemb T 13, 1994 CITIZEN SPORTS] Angels fly again to fastball crown Scugog Angels won their second Eastern Canadian Ladies Fastball championship this past weekend in Moncton, New Brunswick, putting together a perfect record of five wins and no losses. In game one, Angels got off on the right wing with a 6-3 win over Lasalle, Bleu Jays of Quebec. Joanne Graham- McDuff fired a two hitter for the win and Tara Mowder was three for three at the plate. Sheri Brown-King hdd a pair of hits including a two run homer and Gena Spence also rapped out two hits. Game two a squeaker as the Angels downed Charlottetown 3-2 as Cheryl Vaughan gave up just four hits and allowed the "hot shots" a run in the 4th and 6th innings. The second was a.big inning for Angels-as they got all the runs they would need as Mowder again had three hits. Parkinson and Crocker reached safely with two hits ~~ Coaches, umpires and executive with the Scugog Baseball each. . Angels repeated in game three with a 3-2 win over Salisbury as Davis scattered six hits to keep the Flyers at bay. Sherri Brown led off with a double and came home as Graham-McDuff tripled to right. In the bottom of the third, Angels came to life as Brown- King homered, followed by a triple by Nancy McConnell who scored on a single by Graham- McDuff. Mowder continued her torrid hitting with two more in this game. In game four, Angels mercied the Montreal Royal 9-2 in five innings with Brown-King, Gena Spence and Kelly Caldwell knocking out two hits each. Cheryl Vaughan was strong on the mound as she gave up just one hit in her five innings of work. In the final game against Colby (Nova Scotia) Rangers, the Angels again got fine pitching from Davis who gave up only five hits and no runs for a 3-0 victory. Angels did all their scoring against a tough pitcher in the third inning on a Kelly Caldwell single and a single by Tracy Smith. Brown-King hit a long shot to deep centre that cashed in both runs and they added another on a Nancy McConnell ground out. ' Spence and Parkinson had two hits each in this one and Brown-King had the two RBIs. Individually, Davis was named top pitcher in the average. The management and coaching staff of the Angels are extremely proud of the effort and said the ladies did a "whale of a job" down east for the second year in a row. This summer members of the select team played in 40 or more games and this last game, a long awaited showdown with the coaches, umpires, and executive of the Scugog Baseball Association, was just for fun. They proved that they have the pitching, power, and speed to compete at that level and will start early to improve their defence for next year. The 6 minors and 5 majors are all expected to return and provide the nucleus of the 1995 Bantam and Midget teams respectively. They will have three months off before the season begins with indoor practices shortly after the New Year. ' Players interested in joining the program should contact the above players or the Scugog Baseball Association for further information. Select teams with the Scugog Baseball Association are expected next season to be playing against Ontario Baseball Association member teams.
