Sean © What to do? It's an October Saturday when the sports world normally offers up a feast..But these aren't normal times and the faminé might be the worst of all ages Baseball hasn't been played since the days of Expo 67. OF is that the days when the Expos led by 6 or 77 It's been so long we get confused. The NHL is taking a staring eight count while its combatants come to their senses, the NBA seems destined to follow suit, and the NFL? It's around for now but will there be labour peace for the whole season? Don't bet on it. So we go beyond the pages of collective unrest and political posturing by men in pinstripes, who don't resemble the Yankees, to see what else there is in the sports section Six pages deep, at the high school spfead, we seek refuge from the wars. But what's this? Nine thousand public high school teachers have been without a contract for two years so their work- to-ryle campaign means no more after-school sports Help!!ll Quickly we move on On the back page, some actual results. Quite remarkably, Australia enjoyed a first-inning lead of 81 runs and extended that 10 282 in the second of a test match with Pakistan. Uhhh, excuse me, but with a lead of 300 this cricket match hardly seems a test for the Aussies so we'll check back when they get to the bottom of the ninth. Sometime next week So the sports section offers no shelter from the storm. Let's try the TV and some channel surfing. Amidst a myriad of fishing shows and goodness knows what else, there are actually a couple of games going on, but we have to watch closely to make sure they're live and not tape-delayed from a time when there was peace on artificial earth Apparently it's a toss-up. Watch Virginia Tech battle Syracyse or St. Mary's clash with Acadia. Three downs or four, it's college football and we'll give it a try even though we're only watching because they don't kick field goals on the Wild Kingdom At the appointed hour for the CBC's hew Saturday night hockey doubleheader, we tune in to see what they'll slap up instead of pucks. Homeward Bound could be the story of Clift Ronning's return to VancouvéR but it tums out to be a dog and a cat and a few other animals of note. Then there's a flick call Splash in which Darryl Hannah looks considerably*better than Don Cherry but seems a fish out of water in the time slat. We lay back on the cushions, close our eyes and crave something untisual. Something almost prehisjoric rat's been missing since the invention of remote control. A-book! Yes, a book, that's what we need. Throwing on our coat we rush to the library only to find it's empty and so is every bookstore in Canada. They're empty because the nation Is reading. The Gamblers were already counting a turkey dinner 2 points as Robert Evans and Mark Decosta put them in the driver's seat. However, with just 3 seconds left dn the clock Devils "sharp shooter" John Mackey found the twine to give the Devils the important tie. Bill Foote had the other Pizza counter as he continues to put up the points in each game. Game 2 saw the J & D Hawks get their act together after losing to the Aces on Sunday, and they pulled together to down the Crandell's Gamblers 3-2. The Gamblers took the early lead on goals by Mark Decosta and Ken Jeffrey but those Hawks came storming back with 3 unanswered tallies by co- sponsor Joe Curran, Peter Lane and Keijo Kinnunen to take their second victory of the season. For the Comets Mike McQuade, Tom Barnes, Dave Dickson and yes, Paul Goreski once again, found the net. Steve Connors and Jay Adam replied but other than Wayne Fox with 2 assists and Doug Seeley with a single that was it for the Sharks as they continue to look for the secret to a second victory. Game 4 saw the Taylor Aces find their winning streak end at one as the Pineridge Phantoms cruised to a convincing 5-0 victory.
