-r 18 ~-- Scugog Citizen - Tuesday, October 18,1994 Education has moved past 'See Spot Run' To The Editor: Politics, even the home-grown variety, sometimes can be a less than forthright business -- which is why I write. All local electors should be both aware of and involved in Afar yy it's our psn being expended. We need to not only get dollar value, but to know where those dollars go -- and why. We should be very sure that those Don't forget about UNICEF To the Editor: Hallowe'en is fast approaching and at this time of year | always like to try and give Unicef (the United Nations Children Fund) a bit of a boost. As the average reader knows, Unicef does its work for children worldwide who are much less fortunate than most of our own tend to be. For example, they are now working in Rwanda to build schools and change curriculum so that future disasters can be prevented. Small amounts go a long way in the developing world! We can all help out by donating small change to the orange boxes our kids carry on Hallowe'en night, and also by putting boxes out at other events such as dances, parties, or even in our local stores around Hallowe'en. I have a supply of the large-size boxes and would be happy to drop one off for your event or store - just give me a call at 985- 3225. I'm willing to roll the coins too (luckily, my kids and some friends always help me with this!) and will make sure to let people know how much our efforts have raised. It all adds up! Janet Banting Greenbank who would "serve" us do not have their own hidden agenda. Having been actively involved in education for over 30 years, mostly in Port Perry, | am especially concerned about our local representation on the Durham Board. It would be wise to mark our ballots only after careful consideration of not only the hopefuls' qualifications and experience, but also of their ability to be fair and open- minded, and to have rapport with the youth they would serve and direct. The most recent lady declaring intent to leap for the brass Board ring brings much of the aforementioned into serious question. Closed-minded extreme fundamentalism, and self-proclaimed omniscience under the flimsy guise of knowing what is truly best for everyone frighten me silly, as they should every rational being. The catalogued qualities tend as well to be breg from lack of, or limited, superior, true education, possibly too much idle time, and a latent, innate desire for power over someone or LIBERAL DURHAM EAST RIDING NOMINATION CANDIDATE for DURHAM EAST GEORGE KHOURI needs your support. Remember: all knowledge is power anyway, if that's what we're ultimately after. Even old despot Hitler knew that when he furiously burned books. Besides, in this Information Age, we have gone well past the little red schoolhouse, readin', 'ritin', 'rithmetic, and "See Spot Run". So let's cross our ballots wisely, after having well considered each candidate's motives for wanting to represent us. We're all in this business of municipal government together.
