' Have Ticket Will Travel Book early avoid letdown by Virginia Frew-Clarke How is it that the first thing passengers ask each other about whin they board a flight is always the cost of their ticket? Who doesn't want to feel that they received the lowest possible price? Ultimately, there are two types of passenger flights available to Canadian travellers, scheduled flights and charter flights. Scheduled flights are carriers such' as Air Canada and Canadian Airlines. These airlines and their affiliated partners fly all over the world at the same scheduled times, every day of the year. To get the best price on these flights you must do two things. First, book as early as possible and second, when able, stay over a Saturday night at your destination. Scheduled airlines want to know numbers in advance. Due to the size of these companies, they can change the type of aircr@ to accommodate the number of advance reservations. As a rule, there are three different classes of service: first, business & economy. All three may or may not be offered depending on the length of the flight. First & business classes differ only slightly and although both are quite costly, they do offer the most flexibility. Economy class however is broken up into many sale fares with the least expensive being the most strict. Usually with these tickets, you must book three weeks in advance and no h or refunds are allowed. However, keep in mind that the airlines only allocate a limited number of seats at these prices, the next grouping slightly higher and so on. The closer you book to your departure, the more expengive the ticket becomes. When making a reservation on a scheduled carrier, book as early as possible. On the other hand, chartered airlines such as Canada 3000, Air Transat, Royal Air and the newest Sky Service are the complete opposite. These' airlines have very few planes and therefore, seasonally move their flights to wherever the tourists are headed. Usually Great Britain and Europe in the summer months and Florida and the Caribbean for the winter season. They offer reasonable rates with no advance purchase or minimal stay rules. Unlike scheduled flights, if their seats aren't selling as well as they had hoped, quite often they will lower the prices to fill the aircraft. However, be cautious, if you wait too long to make your reservation in hopes of getting a charter sell off, you could also be disappointed if your choice of dates suddenly sells out.
