mw" Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 1, 1994 --37 _4 Midget Panthers shed early doldrums Yes Virginia, there really is a Santa Claus and there really is a Midget 1 team in town this season. The only trouble is...there hasn't been much to report - yet. Unfortunately, the lads have been anxiously awaiting that ever elusive first win but once recovered from their "absenteeism", this is bound to happen. Under the new direction of Warren Geer, Garry Geer, and Ryan Parliament, the Panthers have the potential to do Very well. . Along with the excellent credentials of the coaching staff, the talents on the club consist of; forwards Daryl Bourgeois, Tom Chambers, Jeremy Geer, Kevin Hobbs, Matt Hobbs, Erik Hudson, Craig Laird, Kenton LeFort and Ian Shrigley. Backing them up on defence are Gord Bentley, Jeff Clarke, Chris Drury, Jeff Jamieson and lan McCready. Last but never least, the goal tending duo of John Babcock and Scott Prechitko. This year the Panthers are sporting their Panther emblem on jerseys provided by their new sponsor "Lakeside" Golf and Hockey. Despite being off to a slow start in the win column, it is still early days yet and these guys are just getting geared up. With a full contingent of talent on this squad, it will be only a matter of time before we start reading the results. Recently a group of Major Bantams were called up to 'fill in some gaps' for a home game on October 24th. Colin Laird, Mike Morden, Shane Norton, Nick Skerratt and Jay Strickert did a fine job despite the outcome of this one 7-1 in favour of Lindsay. The lone goal for the Panthers was finally scored in the dying minutes of this very long game and came from our visiting Bantam Shane Norton assisted by Kevin Hobbs. It was a much better showing when the Panthers travelled to Port Hope on October 26th to match wits against a feisty Action fast paced in the Novice HL The 'Novice House League games last week were very exciting and fast paced. In the first game of the day Port Perry Printing squared off against VanCamp. This game was back and forth with some good passing and great goal tending by Kellen Jackson and Tyler Webb. David McGarry scored for the Printing team unassisted as he picked up his own rebound and put it through the five hole. VanCamp answered with a goal by Jesse Mischtian with assists going to Matt Whalen and Wesley Scalletta. The game was tied going into the third period when David McGarry scored again with the assist going to Justin Sanders who was playing out for this game. Three minutes later Jesse struck again with the assist going to Tyler Martin. The rest of the game went back and forth with both teams having scoring chances. However the score stayed at 2-2. Matt Whalen played well on defense and Stephen Groves played the blue line very well as he kept the puck in the opposing zone on several occasions. John Dutka gets the good hustle award for the VanCamp team. For the Port Perry Printing team Adam Smart and John Love had very strong games on defense. Brad Layzell had some great moves as he stick handled his way through the opposition. The good hustle award goes to Tim Ouellette for his efforts. In the second game it looked like the Re/Max team had forgotten to set their alarms as they were down to the Haugens Due to space restrictions" some sports reports could not be printed in this week's edition of the Citizen Sorry team 4-1 at the end of the first period In the second period they woke up a bit and scored 2 goals, however, Haugens picked up 1 Going into the last five minutes of play Haugens was up 6-3 when the alarm went off. Re/max scored 2 goals and with a minute to go they pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. This move paid off as Jessie Mullins tied it up and with 40 seconds to go he put the go ahead goal between the pipes. What an exciting ending to a great (early) morning. Scoring for the Haugens team were Matthew Kamminga with 4 goals. Way to go Matt! Matthew Charron and Joseph Kozlinsky both picked up a goal each. Alex Herold, Justin Cottrell and Reid Harris picked up assists on the goals. Colin Holditch, Scott Lennox and Jesse Mullins each picked up 2 goals for the Re/Max team, with Darren Tapper picking up the single. Assists went to Kyle Geer who was playing out for the first time this year, Brook Mck bind a Redmen. This night we were only two short of our own and Port Perry opened up the scoring in the first period on a power play goal by Craig Laird. This one was set up by some smooth passing moves from our own end and assists went to Jeremy Geer and Jeff Clarke. Nice work fellas. Port Hope retaliated with not one but two goals to take the lead 2-1. Not to be outdone, our slight but mighty Jeff Clarke scored a crackerjack goal to tie things up. Once again the goal came on the power play and Jeff came sneaking in from the blue line and drilled it past the Redmen goalie, with the assist of Craig Laird and lan Shrigley. The game continued to be an aggressive one and we eventually lost another two players, as the minutes ticked away in the third period, Port Hope took advantage of a misfortunate situation and quickly scored two further goals leaving the final score 4-2 in favour of the Redmen. Jay King donned his blades to join us for this one and we hope to see him back agaip as a permanent fixture. The Port Perry Panthers Midget 1 team took to the ice for the third time in one week for a match up against the L.N.H.L Oshawa Bruins. Game time was 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 29th and it proved to be an exciting one for the crowd. Putting in a rare guest appearance was our very own #55 - "Nice to see you back in the line up" Ian, also in this game onee again filling in on defence was Nick Skerratt from the Bantam 'A' squad. There was lots of good hustle from both sides in the first period and the action was end to end. Both goalies were coming up with some good saves but in the last second of play; lan Shrigley drilled it past the goalie on a nice set up in front from Kenton LeFort and Craig Laird. The line of Tom Chambers, Matt Hobbs and Kevin Hobbs went to work in the second producing two goals. While Kevin kept the Bruin defencemen tied up in front, Matts strong forechecking behind the net allowed him to feed the puck to Tom enabling him to slip it by a startled goalie. Minutes later while short- handed some goodthustle from Blake Cunningham and Craig Kehoe. Brady Gray gets the good hustle award for the Re/Max team and the honour goes to Russell Lee of the Haugens team. : VAN CAMP & KELLER Chartered Accountants 04 CASIMIR STREET, PORT PERRY 985-9725 the guys allowed Kevin Hobbs to blast one in the net from inside the blue line increasing the Panthers lead 3-0. Late in the period playing two men short Scott Prechitko comes up with some superb saves to keep the Bruins at bay. Financial Accounting Income Tax Planning & Consulting Financial Planning & Projections Business Consulting CORPORATIONS - FARMS INDIVIDUALS - SMALL BUSINESS In the third while playing two men short again, the Bruins pressure finally pays off rewarding them their first and only goal. As the game progressed, Jay King snuffed out any Bruins' comeback hopes by scoring the Panthers fourth goal assisted by Ian Shrigley and Kevin Hobbs. Daryl Bourgeois completed this 5-1 win in the dying seconds of the game with a nice rush and a back handed goal in the top corner assisted by Nick Skerratt. Well done everyone! Next home game against Belleville, November 7th at 9:15 p.m. Come out and cheer them on! Team work pays off for Pineridge Way to go Pineridge Atoms! Amazing goal tending by Zak Fis and Shane Fischer and great defensive plays by Garrett Brown, Dylan Harper, Wes Langmaid, Mike Thompson, Mike Wiseman and David Halward served up one great game played by our boys. We hosted Oshawa Red Wings Thursday night and the scoring started early for us with a goal by Skerratt, assist by Geoff Simpson and Mike Wiseman. Oshawa came back to tie it up to end the first period. A 'second goal by Derek Bond, assist to Mike Milligan and David Halward set the tone for a great end to end game. Next goal by Simpson seemed to clinch the game for us giving us a great lead Oshawa fought hard but came up one goal shy when Thompson assisted by Timmers and Wiseman scored to make ita 4-3 game. On Saturday, Oct. 2 our boys travelled to Whitby for an exhibition game. Our coach Paul Milligan, assistants Randy Wiseman and Steve Churchill made a team line change which proved to be a good move. * With 53 seconds left in the first Wes Langmaid pulled the string for our first goal of the game, assisted by Glen Thompson. There was no scoring in the second. Whitby came close to scoring a few times, but excellent goal tending by Fis kept the game from being tied. In the third period the game got a little more aggressive but our boys showed some good sportsmanBhip and kept to the game plan. The boys broke up Whitby's game over and over at the neutral zone, which seemed to frustrate Whitby. Our defensive care of Bond, Robbins, Schembri; Skerratt, Simpson and Timmers kept the play to the outside and cleared the puck quickly. Milligan showed some great puck handling and passing throughout the game, with Harper, Brown and Thompson rushing to the net looking for rebounds and causing havoc in front of the net really Beined the game plan. With just seconds left in the game Whitby had a break away but was denied the goal by a sprawling save by Fischer which let us go home with a 2-1 victory Our boys seem to be playing with more of a team effort. Way to go guys and coaching staff! Good luck and keep up the goad work and excellent team spirit. Old Curiers Never Die ... They Coach!
