Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 1, 1994 -- 3 Remembrance Day Poppy campaign now underway With Remembrance Day coming up, branches of the Royal Canadian Legion across the country will be holding their annual poppy campaigns. Wearing a poppy at this time of year does two things: it serves as» a reminder to all of us that over 100,000 Canadians lost their lives in two world wars, the Koregn War and international peacekeeping. " The poppy campafgn is also a source of revenue for the Legion which is used in a variety of ways. Branch 419 Port Perry Legion provided some infarmation about its poppy fund. Last year, just over $6900 was collected by Branch 419. There was $3900 in the trust to start the campaign and the cost of poppies, promotion and materials amounted to $2057. Over the year*a total of $7882 was disbursed to help veterans and their families, leaving a total of $894 in the trust fund to start this year's campaign. Here are some of the ways the money is used to improve life for people in the community: assistance td former service members and their families; the purchase of medical equipment and appliance for community health facilities; affordable housing for veterans and senior citizens; bursaries for students; support services for seniors.
