1994 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Getting involved with our local schools To the Editor: An exciting new initiative that is occurring in education is the increased involvement of the community in our local schools. .An example of this partnership has just occurred at Cartwright High School with the construction of a new hard court surface for student use. This project was possible only with the cooperation of many people. Scugog Trustee Bobbie Drew, Superintendent of Education 'Dr. Barry Vail, Thank To the Editor: Friday, November 11th, Remembrance Day and Monday, November 14th, the day to "vote". These two days should be remembered in Scugog Township this coming weekend. "One of the reasons why man has progressed so far beyond other forms of life on earth is that he has the ability to remember. To remember what has happened in the past, and to transmit his memories to other men, and to posterity Sometimes, however, we must make an effort to remember and Remembrance Day is an aid to help us to recall the sacrifices that have been made by our fellow. citizens in order to preserve for us the freedoms that Superintendent of Plant Mike Graham, and Plant Manager Bill Evans from The Durham Board of Education were very much instrumental in providing funds for the paving of our court. Bobbie Drew in particular, was a champion for our cause and we appreciate her involvement. The School Advisory Council under the direction of chairperson Reg Keddy did much of the organization and planning of the project from the community aspect We Now enjoy Support your local Legion Annual Poppy Campaign Please, when you see a campaign box give generously. A small way to thank a "Vet" Remember, voting time is near again and the promises we hear again. Let us be quite sure we share 'again in the choosing of our fate Do not sit home upon your butt and act as if your mind is shut, then disapprove and say "Tut- Tut" if the cheice you made is late Use your heart this coming Friday, use your head this coming Monday. Get out and "Vote" Roy Walker Smith, Port Perry TIME FOR NEW LEADERSHIP in SCUGOG On November 14th Vote Glenn Malcolm or REGIONAL COUNCILLOR Authorized by the CFO, Glenn Malcolm Campaign FOR LEADERSHIP with a DIFFERENCE! They were active in approach ing three members of our community, Jim Williams, Bob Strong and Jim Martyn who donated their time and materials We are most grateful to these gentlemen who brought their equipment over to the school and spent a very long day preparing the surface for the paving. Their Waiting To the Editor After having just completed reading this week's edition of your paper | have to express my views regarding Joel Aldred's bashing of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation. [ am totally abhorred by his actions and goings on. His sign "Stop the Casino" is a misrepresentation of facts . What is Mr. Aldted's problem Chief Edgar and his group have done nothing wrong. Everything has been above board and legal and the public has been kept well informed It seems to me that it was not that long ago that you were against Alex Shepherd for his stand on the charitable gaming facility and now since he sent out that so called survey you are all for him My husband and | were so upset about this survey because as Chief Edgar states there was no provision for anyone to mark a box that they were all for this facility that we just tossed it in file 13 We also agree with Chief Edgar that when other developments were done on the island there were no objections from anyone Let us stop this and think of the jobs it will create and the contributions were most appreciative and, in fact, made the completion of the project possible It is impressive that these types of partnerships can occur with such positive results. All parties were concerned with providing expanded opportu nities for our students and we certainly shall make good use of our new court It is important that members of the larger community are aware that these kinds of projects are taking place and | appreciate the space in your newspaper to bring it to their attention Leo Plue Principal Cartwright HS for the apology benefits it will bring to this area We are waiting for Mr Shepherd's public apology to Chief Edgar and the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation Sincerely Jacqueline C. Nolan Scugog Island So very proud of Fl students To the Editor: On November 5, the class of '94 graduated from PP. H.S. | was proud to see such a large successful group of students present to receive their OAC diplomas However, | was especially proud of the first "lead" class of French Immersion students who received their French Bilingual OAC diplomas. Many of these students achieved outstanding marks, awards and scholarships They truly deserve some special public recognition for their thirteen years of hard work and dedication to the French Immersion Programme. This first pilot class saw many "good and bad" times together since their start in 1981, however, they told me proudly that they didn't regret a minute of it So, "Hats off'" to you young men and women and best of luck in all of your future endeavours!
