CR -- a -------- = Sciigos Citsen -- Tuesday, November 81994 -- 5% CITIZEN SPORT SHORTS = Petite B's looking forward to banner year te season is well underway - apologies for game write-ups being delayed till now - better late than never! This years Port Perry Petite B Team has 18 girls; Jill Pashley , Lisa Geer, Alaina Davis, Stacey Cunningham, Rhea Baxter, Sheena Christie, Alaina Burger, Nicole Virtue, Janna Ostafichuk, Kristen Waller, Kelly Sadler, Shannon Warriner, Heather Reid, Ashley Aldridge and Katherine Cooke. The team staff is Coach Barry Virtue, Assistant Coach Steve Cunningham, Heather Davis, Diane Cooke and Lynda Burger. The sponsor is Shepstone Haulage. The girls first game was Saturday, October 15th at home against Whitby. Port and Whitby have always had great games and this one was no exception. In a very hard fought evenly matched game, which Legionnaires drop a pair The Port Perry Pee Wee Legionaires paid a visit to Peterborough last Sunday night for a tilt with the Nationals and it was a visit the local boys would just like to forget. Our man between the posts Chris Monsma was spectacular in doing everything in his power to keep the Nats from scoring, but they kept the pressure on and put two past him in the first. The penalty box should have had a revolving door that game to save wear and tear on the hinges as both teams ran into double digits in minutes. The Nats placed very disciplined hockey and never gave up the sustained pressure for a moment. They added two in the second despite the efforts of the Legionaires to stem the tide. Mike MacLennan stepped between the posts in the final frame and he too, made some great stops. Ryan McQuade carried the puck end to end and un-loaded a heavy shot right on the net, but the goalie came up with the stop. Jeff Ashton and Greg Bruton also made a determined effort to score but were not able to get the disc behind the goalie. The Nats potted a couple more before tempers flared. The ref handed out a few misconducts and the game was called at 1:09 of the third with Peterborough up 6-0. Chalk this one up to experience for the Legion crew. On November 3, Legionaires hosted Uxbridge Bruins who opened the scoring from a scramble in front of the net. MacLennan had a hot first period in the nets and the Uxbridge had to come up with a big stop when Nick Pelyk found the range, only to have the puck end up on the doorstep. In the second, Mike made a nice poke check to stop a two on one break, but Uxbridge scored at the 1:46 mark. Chris Monsma went into the net for the third and came up with two key saves before giving up a goal on a two on one break. Braden Tarbotton fed a nice pass from the corner to McQuade who made no mistake with Chris Skerratt getting the other assist. Port's second goal came on a fine individual effort by Pelyk who went end to end with a Bruin over him like a blanket, assist to Ashton. Uxbridge nailed the lid on the coffin door with two more goals in the third to make the final 5-2. This was a clean game with the Bruins taking six minutes and the Legion crew four. Next home game for the Port Perry Pee Wee A squad is this Friday evening at 9:15 when they host Belleville. Why not take in the game and see the young stars of today. Bantam B's hot and cold a On Wed. Nov. 2nd, the Techstar Bantams faced off against the Oshawa Red Wings at the Scugog Arena. A Coming off their first loss of the regular season, the Techstars were out to get back on a winning track. The Techstars weren't quite themselves but managed to come out on top, with the help of somg amazing goaltending by Doug Short, who handled many breakaways including two 8 on 0's. The Techstars opened the scoring at 12:39 of the first JP Copeland scored from Dan Lyons and the stars were up 1-0. The first period ended at that score. Aaron Levy struck twice in the second at 14:22 and 5:42 from Dave Kaminga (on the first goal) and Ryan Puckrin and Dave Kaminga. Ian Parliament scored from JP Copeland and Adam "Bullet" Brain at 4:56 still in period 2. Scott Sanderson got their final goal of the period on the powerplay from Dillan Weber and Dave Gainey. With 42 seconds left in the second the Red Wing team finally cracked Clippers over Doors On Fri. Nov. 4, the Pee Wee B's headed down the road to Stouffville to take on the Clippers. This was our first encounter with the Stouffville team and the game proved to be close on the scoresheet but lopsided in the penalty department. Despite losing 3-2, Port had to deal with a large discrepancy in, penalty calls as they were assessed 24 penalty minutes compared to 4 minutes for the home team. Ryan Fraser had a standout game : in net and was given the "Best Effort" award for his work in facing twice as many shots as our opponents goalie. Stouflville were the nt to get on the scoreboard early in the first the score remained 1-0 to the end of the first as Port had to kill off a 5 minute major. Troy Hazelton and John Bacon worked hard to try and get us on the board. In the second, Port was again assessed a 5 minute major, but despite being shorthanded scored our first goal. Scott Brownson swept in and flipped the puck over the goalie after receiving a pass from Scott Heading into the third, Stouffville took the lead again on a Power Play, but just minutes later our 'B's tied 'the score 2 all. Murphy Irvine scored on an assist from Scott Cunningham. Stouffville scored again seconds later to take the lead 3-2 which they held to the end. Kudos go to Chris Jones, David Justynski, John Burnett and Joel Phoenix for some good penalty killing in the game, particularly when we were short by two men late in the game. On Nov. 5, the "Overhead Doors" hosted the Oshawa Blackhawks and registered a shutout win of 20. This was a low-key game compared to the previous night with few penalties and fewer goals. The second period also saw some good chances and improved passing. Russ Brown and Kam Cooper broke in on a breakaway early in the second but were stonewalled by the Oshawa goalie. Port Perry finally broke the ice and scored the first goal. Scott Cunningham tipped in a rebound from a shot by Joel Phoenix to give Port the 1-0 lead. Grant Hooker was credited with an assist, The team continued to work hard to preserve the win and the shutout. Towards the end of the third Matt McMaster and Scott Cunningham assisted on a goal by Kam Cooper to give Port Perry a 2-0 lead which held to the final buzzer. Chris Thompson registered the shutout and was the coaches' choice for "Best Effort". Come out and cheer the next home game Sat. Nov. 12, at 8:00 p.m. the perfect goaltending of Doug Short. The 3rd period was quiet with the only goal scored at the 14:32 mark by Dan Lyons from Ian Parliament and "Bullet", to make the score 6-1. On Fri. Nov. 4th, the Techstar Bantams collided with the home team in the Woodville tournament. Lack of good competition has gotten the best of the Techstars, and the fairly strong Woodville team came away with a 5.3 victory. The Woodville team scored early and by the end of the first it was 2-0. Early in the second they added another one. The 3 goal deficit looked bad but the Techstars fought back. They cut the lead to 2 goals when Ryan Puckrin put a shot off the goalies pad and in the net. Assisting on the goal were Gavin Baxter and Scott Harper. - Woodville scored another goal at 7:29 to make it 4-1. The Techstars got that one back when Dillan Weber scored from Dave Gainey and Scott Sanderson. Woodville regained the 3 goals lead at 4:03. At 1:28 with the goalie (Rob Sim) on the bench in favour of the extra attacker, Troy Campbell put one home to make it 5-3. The next day they suited up for game 2 against the Sutton "A" team. Things just didn't seem to be going their way this game and the 4-1 score showed i . Troy Camipbell scored their only goal from Dillan Weber and Gavin Baxter in the first shift of the game. This loss ended the tournament for the Techstars. Although they were disappointed, these two games were a good wake up call and showed them that all games won't be as easy as their league games have been to date.
