When did we all go crazy for 'country,' and more importantly, why? The answer may as simple as the decorating idea itself. Back in 1987, with literally dozens of consumer staged in the Metro Toronto area each year, catering to every interest from cooking to travel, it was tough to imagine there could have been a gap in the show business marketplace. But on closer examination, an. important element had indeed been missing all along and the need was filled by what is known as "Canada's Original, The Markham Country Decorating and Collectibles Show and Sale," this year celebrating its seventh anniversary. "Country decorating is more popular than ever," éxplains the show's co-producer Debra Grose- Russell. "I've never seen a style go to people's hearts and sustain a longevity the way 'country; has. It's a style that is warm, friendly, comfortable, easy to livé with and allows for lots of personal expression. No wonder, it's been North America's favourite look in home decor for more than 15 years," Ms. Grose- Russell said. The Markham Country Decorating and Cqllectibles Show this year is November 18, 19 and 20 at the Markham Fairgrounds, and visitors will enjoy the work of hundreds of talented individuals from all over Ontario. Donnajean Ritter of "Tomorrow's Heirlooms" on Scugog Island will be one of them. Her specialty is hand- painted childrens chairs. The chairs, which she crafts from solid pine, are then painted with farm scenes, teddy bears or * other animals. They make a Independent Opticians : lovely additien to thé room of any youngster. Donnajean has been painting all her life, and started creating her delightful painted childrens chairs about ten years ago. She also created pég boards for kids rooms with hand-painted designs of all kinds. This will be her first exhibition at the Markham show and she's looking forward to it very much. Most 'country-o-philes" talk, about the style with a kind of fervour usually reserved for a religious experience and that is part of the key to the success of country. It has to do with emotional roots, explains Ms. Grose- Russell. This Markham show and sale November 18-20 brings together country-style furnishings, prints, accessories, crafts, folk art and quilts. It's a place where devotees of the country style of life can indulge in their decorating dreams, even find unique yet homey Christmas gifts for family and friends----and have a great time doing it.
