This film will not a PULP FICTION rated R: with warning of Brutal Violence John Travolta, Jackson Written & Directed by Quentin Tarantino PULP: from the Latin "pulpa" meaning flesh. Among other meanings, is a magazine printed on inferior paper, featuring shocking stories about crime, sex and violence. FICTION: Latin "fingere" meaning to form. Anything that Samuel L is made up or imaginged. That just about reviews this movie. An imaginary story about crime, sex and violence. To read the ad in the papers, quote "fabulous, funny, cinamatic fantasy, audacious, innovative, shocking and enjoyable", you would think that you are going to see the funniest movie ever made. This is very misleading, the people I went with, including me were not expecting the violence. In tiny, tiny print the warnings mw Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 21, 1994 -- 15 + of brutal violence, drugs and alcohol are barely readable. I don't want to take anything away from the movie but I think everyone should be forewarned. The group I went with, you remember them, the adventurous shoppers _ in Niagara Falls, I think they saw more brutality than they bargained for. I loved it. I hated it. It is a difficult movie to review. I have crossed out more on this column than I have written. MAME on stage at Town Hall gave me goosebumps by Heather Gibson MAME rated: FUN Scugog Choral Society: Pam Kennedy, Michele Jones, JoAnne Prout & Richard DeJong. Small Town - BIG THEATRE Opening night on Broadway, I mean Queen St. I have never reviewed a live musical before, 80 | hope you don't notice my lack of experience. 1 was thrilled to be a part of opening night. What an honour to live in a town where there is so much talent. If you enjoy people watching, you should try watching people enjoying great theatre. Town Hall 1873 was packed. I looked around many times and everyone was having so much fun. I didn't know if I was supposed to introduce myself and interview people, or remain incognito and cloaked in silence. I opted for the easy choice my first time out and eavesdropped. "Terrific" was the most popular pronouncement, "it's great" was 'the number 2 most favourite comment, "Isn't this fun" was overheard at intermission. I did interview 3 people unbeknownst to them. Is that legal? Well just in case I will not use any names and the quotes will be changed slightly to protect the innocent (me). Question: how are you enjoying the show? : 1) Man: "I love it, we try to get to everything that plays here at the Town Hall." 2) Woman: "Fabulous talerit, isn't this a quaint little town, half of the town is on stage and the other half in the audience." 1 reminded her that our township is 18,800 (1994 stats.) strong, and to be sure to tome back for the Santa Claus parade and our Dickens' Christmas. 3) Man: "It's great, a lot of laughs, when 'does the baby- sitter have to be home?" 10:00 g'clock I replied, so the unhappily, unknown, unnamed man had to go home to relieve Latest videos See ad 'page 20 our baby-sitter, Everyone in this musical has such terrific stage presence and comedic timing. It's a knee slapping, hand clapping kind of show. The musical is taken from the play Auntie Mame (1966) that was taken from a novel written by Patrick Dennis, Mames' nephew. He tells the story of his ageless eccentric Auntie Mame from the 1920s to the 1940s. He lived in a whirlwind of parties, shopping and exotic journeys, learning life's most important lessons. How to have fun and enjoy every single opportunity thai ever comes your way. w The exuberance of Auntie THANK YOU! To the voters of WARD 2 for your continued support and trust. MARILYN PEARCE Councillor 985-9250 Mame is magical. The transformation of Miss Gooch is hysterical and the Betty Boop Girls, tie Dancers and the Partygoers set the Town Hall on edge with the velocity of their singing, I got goosebumps. So if there were approximately 65 people in the cast and crew, and I'm guessing 200 people in the audience, what were the other 18,535 Scugog citizens doing on Thursday night. Town Hall 1873 was the place to be. Tickets are available at Irwin Smith Music and remaining performances are Wed. Nov. 23rd, Thurs. Nov. 24th, Fri. Nov. 25th, and Sat. Nov. 26th. * TO THE VOTERS OF WARD ONE! A sincere thank you! | will do my best to deserve your trust. DOUG MOFFATT Authorized by the CFO, Doug Moffatt Campaign r One thing is certain, see it with a group of people then sit down and argue about it. Was it great? Was it disgusting? I got polarized results from my survey, four people with completely opposing opinions. Pulp Fiction was this year's winner at the Cannes Film Festival and John Travolta's come-back? I'm glad I saw this one, but I can't say I loved it or hated it. To say I loved it might suggest I'm ill. To say I hated it would mean I am very closed minded. Curiosity is what drove me to see this film. I enjoyed it. It is restricted, and so it is not for everyone, but I saw the art in this film. It was outrageous, it was hilarious, it was sexy. It was violent, it was disgusting, it was repulsive. It worked. It was entertaining. It was a roller- coaster ride with every emotion I think 1 can experience. Pulp Fiction shows the jaded dark side, and the human side of ppeal to everyone 3 career gang wiseguys. For them it is a job and they have their own lives away from the violence. John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson were superb. It was great to see John in such a real character. Who is Samuel L. Jackson? I don't know. I can't ever remember seeing him in anything before but his performance was definitely memorable. Bruce Willis, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keital, Roxanne Arquette, Eric Stoltz, what a great cast. This was an unusual film for me. I think there was a message here somewhere but | must have missed it. I would like to see it again, next time after reading Coles notes. : I don't know how the director made me feel so much outrageous humor with so much violence, but he did. Next time I'd like him to write and direct something that makes me feel 5'8" tall, 130 lb., naturally blond and very, very rich.
