wy 30 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, Novemb 21, 1994 The dragon sloop at rest for the winter Ken La "Chi "a 30 foot & dwind Yachts of Nest! besid racing sloop Wh restored. This beautiful sloop went Into winter storage over the weekend, and Ken Is counting the days until she Is launched again next spring. See story. The dragon has been tucked away for the winter. But you can bet Ken Lavalette is counting the days until the dragon will see the sunlight once again and feel the rush of the spring breezes on her canvass. The dragon is called "Chimaera," a 30-foot dragon class racing sloop that once slipped gracefully through the waters off Hong Kong but eventually wound up in bad condition at a marina on Lake Ontario. That's where Lavalette found this classic a few years ago, and he put 2400 careful and loving hours into her restoration. Of the dozens of wooden boat restorations Lavalette has done at Woodwind Yachts in Nestleton, the "Chimaera" project is the one that gives him the most pride This year, "Chimaera" was the feature craft at two large shows: The Toronto International last January, and the Toronto Inland Water Show in September. All who viewed her sleek, glistening hull agreed, she is a work of true beauty, finished in the finest exotic wood. Lavalette said last week "Chimaera" will go into storage for the winter and next May 24 weekend, will be officially launched at Newcastle Harbour where she will be berthed all next summer. This will be in conjunction with a large show of wooden boats on that weekend at Newcastle. In restoring Chimaera, Lavelette was able to retain six pieces of wood from the original hull as well as the ballast keel. Last summer, Lavalette was able to sail her several times on Lake Ontario and said with a smile that she is fast, very fast. The original Chimaera was designed by a Norwegian in 1929 and built in Germany. She did most of her racing in the waters off Hong Kong. She is now owned by a Toronto dentist and racing entNusiast who plans to race her competitively in the summer of 1996. Workshops aim to keep Ontario farms 'green' by Heather McCrae A new farm plan, developed by Ontario's agricultural community, could help farms stay green. Environmental Farm Plans are documents prepared by farming families to raise the awareness of the environment on their farm. PORT PERRY PLAZA (Hwy. 7A) 985-2084 Plans "During the workshops I assist farmers in filling out worksheets designed to help them do an environmental risk assessment of their operation. They then develop an action plan to address any problem areas." A local committee then reviews their plan to ensure the proposed solutions are practical and eligible for a grant. So what are some of the issues raised at these workshops? Knowing the type of soil on a farm, for instance, and its landscape are crucial in determining the type of farming that can be done, what inputs are needed and the potential results. EFP soil and site evaluation worksheets give farmers a chance to identify the type of soil found on the farm and calculate the potential for soil compaction, wind erosion, soil loss, as well as surface and ground water contamination. The EFPs also deal with the safe use of pesticides, how to handle them and the proper storage of same. If improperly stored, livestock manure and other organic materials may contaminates ground and surface water. An example of this would be poorly constructed, maintained or operatedémanure storage systems that may overflow, leak or burst. Liquid petroleum products such as gasoline, diesel and kerosene must be stored safely to prevent spills and leaks which can quickly pass through soil and into ground water. One small leak of one drop per second can release about 900 litres of gasoline into ground water in one year and it takes only a few litres of gasoline to pollute a farmstead's drinking water. The EFP workshop deals with these problems. For further information and/or registration call Sue Green at 1-905-987-5320 or the OMAFRA office at 1-800-263- 8023. The first session on Tuesday, November 29 runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the following concourse is December 13, 7 to 10 p.m. All workshops are conducted at the OMAFRA office and registration should be done beforehand.
