Regional councillor Yvonne Christie was not able to attend Monday's inaugural meeting as she remains in hospital in Toronto under-going tests. Mr. Cuddie travelled to her + hospital room on Sunday to take the oaths and declaration, he told Monday's meeting. He later said councillqr Christie may be out of hospital and back in Port Perry by the end of this week. Mayor Hall took the opportunity during Monday's meeting to pay tribute to Scugog Township treasurer Kathleen Harper, who passed away last week from cancer. His« voice breaking with emotion, "the Mayor called Kathleen a dedicated Township employee for 20 years and "a very good friend." Her sons lan and Brian were at the meeting and on behalf of the ywnship the Mayor presented i framed prints of the alace in memory of their mother. Speeches by the elected politicians were kept short and to the point. Noting that the past six years in Ontario have been the toughest economically since the «Great Depression, Mayor Hall said the recession is over. "The recovery will be slow," he continued, "but we will recover." He welcomed the new members of council elected November 14 and said they will bring new visions and ideas to council meetings. Other members of council thanked the voters for support on November 14 and members of their families for the support they get in the political careers. Newly elected Ward 4 rep Joyce Kelly called the inaugural meeting a "proud and humbling moment for me." She urged council to "govern Scugog looking ahead, rather than looking in the rear view mirror." Ward 2 rep Marilyn Pearce, back on council for a third straight term, said "we are here to build a better community and face the future without fear." In what no doubt was an indication of things to come, councillor Pearce traded some good-natured jibes with Mayor Hall over who gets in the last word. Ken Gadsden, acclaimed in Ward 3 for a second term said he looks back with pride on the last three years, bringing in new projects while holding the line on tax hikes. Ward 5 councillor Karen Puckrin said the mandate for the council in the coming term will be to maintain the same levels of municipal services without raising the tax rates. She said economic development is the key to this two-pronged goal. Freshman Ward 1 councillor Doug Moffatt attended the inaugural meeting dressed in a formal kilt, which he called the "Moffatt tartan." Noting that there are four women and three men on council, he quipped that by wearing his kilt he "decided to join them." He said later, the kilt will not be standard dress when council gets.... down to serious business in the next couple of week. Invocation "at Monday's meeting was delivered by the Rev. David Shearman of Blackstock-Nestleton United Church. Regional chairman Gary Herrema and Durham MPP Gordes Mills both brought greetings to Scugog. Carol Shepherd represented her husband Alex (Durham MP) who was in Ottawa on Monday. A reception followed 'the official ceremonies. Share your stories Have you had a memorable Christmas in your life?
