Growing up on a dairy farm in Holland, she developed a love for nature at an early age and began nurturing her own flower bed when she was seven years old. When she and her husband, Clarence, emigrated to Canada in 1951 they took up residence on a farm owned by Gordon and Floella Cation in Cheltenham, where Clarence worked on the farm for nine years. Being a foreigner in her new surroundings and hardly speaking any English, Grace put her energies into growing flowers. » The next year, with the help of Mrs. Cation, Grace showed her flowers and some knitting at the Brampton Fair, earning many prizes for her entries.
