wy" 16 -- Scugog Citizen ~ Tuesday, D pd 20, 1994 Ras by Jil McIntosh Oshawa, Ont. My most memorable Christmas occurred when I was thirteen, and it started out as a difficult one that was saved by a tiny gesture that ! have never forgotten. My mother loved Christmas with a passion unrivalled. She loved shopping, loved decorating, and her presents were distinguished by two colours of tissue paper, wrapped in an offbeat way that I cannot duplicate. On Christmas morn- ing, I always wanted to sleep in; it was my mother who woke me up at 6 o'clock to open presents. This year, however, was different. I lived with my mother and grandparents, my grand- mother was suffering from Alzheimer's disease, and my mother was recovering from an « illness. We opened presents, but there was no special Christmas dinner. It just wasn't possible that year, and my mother was bitterly disappointed. She was very close to her cousin Deanna, who called around nine o'clock. Mother said she needed to get out of the house for a while, and so she took me to her cousin's for coffee. They sat down, and Deanna asked how the day had gone. My mother burst into tears. This had been her first Christmas without a huge get-together and a feast, apd she couldn't control her sobs. Deanna didn't waste a moment. She put down her coffee, went to the refrigerator, and started to get out the mountain of leftovers from her own family's dinner. Finally it was ready, and Deanna set three places at the dining room table. At ten o'clock at night, we sat and ate turkey, mashed potatoes, candied yams, hot rolls and vegetables, and when thet was finished there was steamed pudding and fruitcake. My mother was never a big eater, but she finished a huge plate and then had dessert, and I don't believe I have ever seen a bigger smile than I saw that night. My grandparents are both gone, and my mother too; there were only four more Christmas' left for her. At every one of them, she talked about her midnight supper with tears of happiness in her eyes, and I knew then that something as simple as a Bright Wis Valued Patrons Thank you Jor lighting up our year.
