Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, December 20, 1994 --17° Response at blood clinic 'overwhelming' Officials with the Red Cross were "absolutely delighted" with the response to a blood donor clinic held December 14 at the Masonic Lodge in Port Perry. "They did a wonderful job for us. The response was very heartwarming," said Liz Tucci, clinic co-ordinator for the Red Cross in the Toronto area. , The target for the Port Perry clinic last week was 140 units. By the time the doors closed at 8:00 PM, 206 units had been collected. This clinic is organized several times a year by the Port Perry Masonic Lodge, and volunteers were very satisfied with the turn-out. "People were lining up (to donate) even before the equipment was set up," said Mason Peter Miles. And volunteers had to scramble to make sure there was enough coffee, juice and donuts on hand for the donors. Mr. Miles said the Lodge really appreciates the donations of coffee ard juice from Port Perry IGA and the donuts from the Country Style restaurant in They were rolling up their sleeves In big numbers at a Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic In Port Perry last week. Thank vou for putting vour trust in us. bY / J Earlier in the week, the Red Cross Central District has issued an urgent appeal for blood as supplies had dipped to critically low levels. Ms. Tucci said the Central office supplies blood to 61 hospitals in the Toronto area (including Community Memorial in Port Perry) and at this time of year needs to collect 800 units each weekday to keep up with the demand. The amount collected has been falling far short of those total in recent week. On some days, less than half the necessary 800 units have been collected. This is not unusual at this time of the year and there are several reasons why supplies of blood decline. Won s We appreciate your choosing us. Management & Staff of FORDER - PARKS INSURANCE 34 Water Street, Port Perry People are busy with the approach of the Christmas season; potential donors often take holidays at this time of year; others are turned away at clinics because they have flu or a cold; and as soon as the snow arrives the number of car accidents goes up which means hospitals need more blood. At one point she said, the Red Cross supplies of blood were down to less than one day, and the situation is not much better now, she said. At least week's Port Perry clinic, Ms. Tucci said it was very encouraging to see so many teen- agers and first time donors. "We really hope they will stay with us as future donors," she said. Last year, the pre-Christmas clinic at the Masonic Lodge collected 186 units of blood. The next clinic at the Lodge will be March 15. Plan to be a donor.
