w 38 -- Scugog Cilizen - Tuesday, December 20, 1994 Santa was at the Scugog Arena Sunday night, but he didn't bring much Christmas cheer for the Port Perry MoJacks. MoJacks, with just a win and a tie in their last five outings, were hooked up against the red hot Georgina Ice, and when this hard-hitting affair was over, the Ice were on top by a 4-2 margin. Coupled with a 6-5 overtime win against 'league leading Bowmanville on Friday night, the four point weekend for the Ice vaulted tliem into sole possession of second place in the Central Junior C standings with 29 points, four up on the Modacks, and two ahead of Uxbridge who defeated Lakefield on Friday night. * In Sunday night's game the MoJacks struck first at 7:31 of the opening period when Jason Cochrane kept driving for the net and a rebound banked in off his stick. MoJacks seemed to have the better of the play in this rugged first period and could have added to their lead were it not for the stellar work of Ice netminder Brian Hoult. But the momentum started to change late in the frame and at 19:22 Mike Hewitt found himself all alone in front of Rick Hutchinson and he made no mistake with a shot to the cotner. Ice blew the game wide open in the second with three un- answered goals for a commanding 4-1 lead. __ Jason Callahan, Don Gillies and Rob Vaughan did the damage on the scoreboard and Hoult continued to display quick hands to keep the MoJacks off the scoresheet. With under six minutes left in the third, MoJacks finally got one by Hoult as Jamie More stickhandled his way in close and scored on the batk-hand. Duane Empringham and Trevor Bremner got the helpers. Despite the disappointing outcome for the MoJacks, this was an entertaining hockey game as both teams showed no hesitation in throwing some heavy hits. Midway 'through the second, MoJacks Ryan Ridgway and Ice Doug Claughton duked it out with both landing some haymakers after they had removed each other's head gear. When it was over they tapped each other on the seat of the pants before heading to the showers. SLAPSHOTS: MoJacks problems on the ice recently are not so much that they have been playing poorly, they just can't seem to get the puck in the net. They have been getting the chances but shots are either going wide or into"the goalie's pads. And they don't have a "game breaker" in the line up, the kind of player who's a threat to score every time he steps on the ice. MoJacks have a very tough schedule coming up over the holiday season starting tonight (Dec. 20) when they are in Bowmanville for a 7:30 start. This Friday night (Dec. 23) they will extend greetings with the Chiefs in Lakefield before enjoying a few days off. On Dec. 27, they host the Bruins at 7:00 PM and the first place Eagles on Dec. 29 for an 8:30 faceoff. A couple of wins in this tough four-game stretch would put a OGhristmas smile on the face of coach Brad Menzies. NUTS ABOUT da CHOCOLATE Jolly old St. Nick and his helper showed up the Scugog Arena Sunday night to drop a puck to help ge the MoJack family Christmas night underway. He didn't bring much cheer for the MoJacks who lost to the Sutton ice 4-2. Compton Cablers don't worry about the losses Compton Cable Minor Novice was on the road to Unionville to play Markham #1 Dec. 15 at 7:00 p.m. They came up against a strong and steady offense and soon fell behind in the score. Taylor Churchill, Shane Jeffrey, Kory Bauer, and Danny Halward played well on defense , blocking many shots. A sharp * three-way passing play enabled Derek Goreski to score the lone Compton Cable goal, assists going to Ashley Lucas and Cassidy Weber. A beautiful centering pass out front by Kyle Mullins to Keenan Geer just missed on the short-side. Todd Lance worked hard to pick up the skill of keeping the puck inside the offensive blueline. The host team earned the win. Saturday Dec. 17, Compton Cable was host to E. Gwillimbury. Port Perry was led by Keenan Geer's awesome two- way play. Kyle Mullins, Tyson Savage, Jeff Tomcheski, and Michael Lycett were persistent around the opposition's net. With a burst of speed Matthew Roth flew by the defence on a clear breakaway just missing the post. E. Gwillimbury shut Compton Cable out with a successful flurry of their own. Strorig defensively for Port Perry was Nelson Langmaid and the hot gloves of Mark Carnaghan and Leo Taillon. Taylor (tenacious) Churchill played his best game yet capped off by a fine rush. Despite coming out behind, all the Compton Cable players left the ice smiling because of the fine effort they put forth. Tournament win for Techstar Bantams On Wednesday Dec. 14th, the Techstar Bantams faced off against Uxbridge. On their last meeting the Techstars walked away with an easy 8-0 win. But this time the Techstars played brutal (and that's the only way to describe it.)
