And for this year's Festival, look for up to 20 carvings in Palmer Park through the generous sponsorship of Dysan Magnetics of Canada. And a special attraction, Scugog Township artist and sculpture Bill Lishman will create a work of art from blocks of ice cut from Lake Scugog. Distinctive Snowflake Festival buttons are going on sale this week at many stores in businesses in Port Perry and Scugog Township, said Mr. McCoshen. The cost is $3 each, or you can spend $5 and get a button as well as ticket for a draw for a trip for two to Atlantic City. The buttons and draw tickets will be on sale at the Latcham Centre during both days of the Festival, with the actual draw to take place Jan. 22 (Sunday) at 4:00 PM at the Gazebo in Palmer Park. And _ special commemorative Snowflake Festival sweat shirts will also be on sale. Certainly one of the highlites of last year's Festival was the sled dog racing that started and ended on Queen Street in the heart of downtown Port Perry. Organized by the Port Perry Kinsmen Club, the racing will be Snowflake Festival chairman Rick McCoshen displays the 1995 ribbon and button. See story above. held on both days of the Festival this year, starting at noon on Saturday and againat 11:00 AM on Sunday. Mushers from all over Ontario, Quebec and northern United States will bring their sleds and teams to the Port Perry to compete in the four and six dog events. The races will start on Queen Street and follow courses on Lake Scugog. Last year, spectators lined the main street to get a good look at the action. Some of the other events planned for the weekend include the Black Label's lob ball "snow ball" tournament at the baseball diamonds, sleigh rides on the lake} horse drawn trolley rides through Port Perry, a friendly snowball fight between teen- agers and the police, a fashion show at the Latcham Centre featuring fashions from local stores, a mixed bonspiel at the Port Perry Curling Club. For the snowmobilers, there will be a poker run again this year on Saturday, Jan. 21 from 9:00 AM to noon with registration at the Port Perry Marina. Mr. McCoshen said the decision to hold the Snowflake Festival on a single weekend (rather than over two weekends last year) was to reduce logistical problems in organizing an event such as this. There will be opening ceremonies on Friday, Jan. 21 at the Gazebo in Palmer Park at 1:00 PM. So, look for those Snowflake Festival buttons and draw tickets on sale this week, pencil in Jan. 21 and 22 on your calendar and plan to be part of the fun and the action that weekend in Port Perry. RIDE final week The Durham Region Police Christmas RIDE program is now in its final week and will end January 8. Up to and including January 1, over, 26,000 had been checked in all areas of Durham Region with Police administering 179 roadside breath tests. These have resulted in 53 temporary (12 hour) licence suspensions and 25 drivers charged with drinking and driving offences. During the * week from December 26 to January 1, the Durham RIDE 'program was operating in Port Perry, Ajax, Oshawa and Bowmanville. And during this week, 6,653 vehicles were checked with a dozen 12-hour suspensions handed out. There were ten people charged with drinking and driving offences, including three who refused to take a breath test. Also during this same time frame, regular police patrols led to six charges of impaired driving.
